I live in the midrange!
Been listening to this album for the last few days. This is a VERY good album. No real clunkers on the album, and it plays like a greatest hits album with better flow. Really like the Pixies, but had not listened in awhile. Enjoying a bit of a "re-current" phase right now (that's radio speak for an old album that cycles back around onto their occasional play list)

I agree that doolittle is good, but for a best of I usually play 'live at the bbc'... it has everything

Doolittle was one CD that I hated the first time I listened to it. I gave it a few more spins and it still didn't do it for me...I think I sold it back like a week after I bought it.

About 9 months later, I love pretty much every song on the CD. I don't know what I was thinking before. The guitar work is excellent, and Black Francis' vocals are hilarious. If I could yelp like him, I would yelp at every damn person I met!

elrod-tom, that Doolittle sounds like a "greatest hits" is exactly what I thought back in '89 when it came out. The follow-up bossa-nova was a disappointemnt but almost anything they could have done would have after Doolittle, but the last album Trompe le Monde was a solid way to end phase 1. They are back together now touring Europe's big festivals to great acclaim, hopefully some new music will follow.

Speaking of Greatest Hits, they have a new one out called "wave of Mutilation". that's on my short list.

I like my "Bossa-nova" disc. That is the only Pixies CD I own though. So what was "Phase 1's" best in your opinion? I'd like to add to my Pixies collection.

Hi Goldenear, IMO, Pixies discs rank as follows:

1. Doolittle
2. Trompe le monde
3. Bossa-Nova
4. Surfer Rosa
5. Come on Pilgrim

The last two are their pre-major label discs, variable in quality. Problem with these is they haven't been remastered. The 4AD 1997 collection, Death to the Pixies had fantastic sound quality, much better than the original discs, but that has been superceded by the new Wave of Mutilation also on 4AD, which has all the same tracks plus some more, but lacks the bonus disc of live material. I assume the new one will maintain the excellent sound quality of the 1997 release. For most people Wave should be all you need outside of Doolitle.

The comp that I have "Pixies at the BBC" is also on 4AD... not sure how it stacks up to the death of the pixies, never had the pleasure

It has a pretty good track list though... it has satiated my pixies fix for quite a while

You can see the tracklist and cover art here

Is it just me, or does the cover art look like a pair of... well... have a look yourself

Yeah, I think I'll get the new compilation cause the bossanova I have is the original CD and the SQ is very poor. Thanks

I saw the Pixies at Coachella and I just couldn't believe that after all those years of inactivity they were able to put on such an incredible show. They were so tight I couldn't believe it. Of course, I never saw them in their earlier days...too young for that...but they put on the best show of the festival. Yes, IMO they put on a better show than Radiohead.

I was a huge fan of the Pixies back in college (late 80s) and still enjoy listening to them.

Anyway, hearing about Doolittle reminded me of a couple of other CDs my roommates and I played heavily back then:

- Key Lime Pie (and various other albums) by Camper Van Beethoven (a local band that broke up around that time...the singer went on to become the singer for Cracker...they are also doing reunion shows now, in fact, I saw them in SF last weekend)

- lots of R.E.M., of course. My favorite has always been Life's Rich Pageant

- Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation...a welcome change from the pop-big hair-metal that was dominating the music scene at the time.

- The Cure's Disintegration (their best album, in my opinion)

- and, surprisingly for someone who always hated country music, the Cowboy Junkies' The Trinity Session, an album I've never gotten tired of.

Wow, Scrith, I know all those records well. IMO, Key Lime Pie was the peak of Camper, great stuff. Daydream Nation is the peak of Sonic Youth, too. Cowboy Junkies and Cure Disintegration are just givens, though.
