The Astell and Kern AK240 Impressions Thread

Thanks, ok thats not good lol. But great sound comes at a cost i guess

I listen to Ak240 a lot during long flight, what I did is carry along a micro USB power bank . My tracks are all high res flacs with only three albums of DSD. The good news is with me falling asleep with the player on, they almost always last just enough for my sleeping time (13 hours or so of flight time and round 6 to 8 hours of sleeping and listening). Occasionally, it runs out of juice and I just plug the power bank in.

So on the whole I find the battery practically sufficient but still wishes it lasts longer.

Hi Guys,

My AK240 is on the way. I would like to know which balanced headphone or earphone goes with AK240. I already have an IE800 with stock cable. Would it be possible to get a balanced cable for IE800?

All suggestions welcome :)

You need to mod your IE800 as the 2.5 connector on IE800 is not balanced. Maybe contact ALO and ask them how much they are willing to charge for the modding of your IE800?

I've read few places that balanced IE800 seems to be better than IE800 by quiet a margin.

Thank you for your reply. Could you please recommend if there are any other headphones or IEMs you would recommend with this DAP with balanced output. Also what adapter I would need to get along with the balanced cable headphones.

I don't own the AK240 so I honestly cannot know but I did stumble across few very positive reviews on ALO IE800 and since you already own it I think the cheapest option would be to give that a go.

Currwang seems to like his with his UREM, all and all I can't say I've found a bad review with any IEM pairing.

People complained about HD800 pairing but that is surely should not be puzzling for anyone.

IE-800 can't be modded, but ALO does sell a new balanced IE-800. The guy who has it here, is quit happy with it.

I use the Shure Se-846 and Noble 6 IEMs with the AK240.  They sound great!  I did change out the stock Noble cable with a balanced Litz cable from Ted at Headphone Lounge.  Great guy, great price and fast delivery. The balanced configuration did enhance the performance of the Noble 6's.  Ted created balanced for 846s and I believe the IE800 use the same MMCX cable mount so I don't see why there would be a problem. Send a note to Ted on the Headphone Lounge thread and he can answer your questions.

Thanks will get in touch with ALO audio. That would be the cheapest option for me now.

I know you can buy balanced cables for SE846 but not sure about the match with AK240.

More inputs from other members about their balanced rig combo with AK240 would be appreciated.

I think it can or else the ALO wouldnt be able to sale it. As far as I know they are modding the stock IE800 by removing the stock unbalanced recessed 2.5 with a balanced 2.5 TRRS and than sale different extension cable for the bottom end (either with kobiconn or 2.5/3.5 balanced termination).

You can also re terminate any 4 wire cable you have to 2.5 mm. Contact Ted at the headphone lounge, he's quit knowledgeable on the matter.

This is a brand new IE-800, then they add, the 2.5 mm TRRS for AK-240.
1 - New Sennheiser IE800, professionally modified to use true fully balanced cables,

1 - 4' ALO audio SXC 24 balanced extension cable to plug into the new 2.5mm balanced plug (Female 4-Pole 2.5mm to the termination of your choice.)
Cost $1249.00 that's a bunch of dough.

I really am amazed at the sound through my UM Miracles, using a balanced cable by Ted. I now understand why they are ranked #1 CIEM. At the beginning of a song (I forget which) there was a wind blowing and I could swear I felt the breeze in my ear. I had to restart three times to make sure I was hearing what I thought I was hearing.
