Chord Hugo

Thanks for the response.  I noticed the rough layout from the powerpoint on the Chord website after I posted and noticed where the PCM sat and hence my original assumption didn't make sense and the followup conclusion of 12mhz.

Is my assumption that reducing Hugo dac to its most basic format being a Delta sigma with custom digital filters remain correct?

Thanks again!

Yes. But saying it's a delta sigma hides an awful lot of sins - it can go from awful to astounding depending upon a huge number of factors, the largest of these being the oversampling rate. For example, going from 64FS to 2048FS produces a huge change in performance - and that is just one example. I have been working with noise shapers for 20 years and I am still discovering ways of improving the sound.

But feedback on what people actually use their volume settings with a named headphone would be very much appreciated.

when I get my Hugo May/June I'll happily oblige but I did do a little test last night on my portable set-up Sony F887/PHA-2 DAC/Amp... the volume on the PHA is about 20% more than the Walkman using hi-gain with my IEM's (N5).

I had a thoroughly enjoyable experience listening to Celebration Day (Led Zep) at full volume & max bass (I felt obliged as I always do with this Album), the volume levels were crazy loud & the bass was pretty mental, there was no distortion... needless to say my ears are now in training for a white-light experience...

ok silly question time... will I be able to use the Walkman's line-out to the Hugo using a mini-jack?

If the Hugo is connected to the AC power supply permanently, can it be left on 24/7 or should it be switched off when not in use?

And a further question for Rob Watts - do you have a rough idea when the replacement for the QBD76 will be available? I will definitely be in the queue to buy one.

That is indeed a very good question. I can't wait to hear it.

Just a quick question, i am picking up some background noise using my sensitive IEM (FAD VI) is that normal? It is the kind that increase with volume increase.

It would be nice if Mr Watts can explain whether the optical input will sound different to coaxial one for red-book quality. People seem to claim go get better result with coaxial.

My preference has always been optical - it's much smoother, and more natural. Generally, optical is not liked as it has more jitter than coax, but all my DAC's have been able to remove incoming source jitter. The benefits optical has is that it reduces ground induced RF noise from the source, and this is responsible for the warmer sound as noise floor modulation is reduced in the analogue stages.

I was speaking to Chord Company earlier (not the Hugo's Chord, separate comps'), they will have a range of cables for the Hugo imminently it appears (RCA, USB etc.), hopefully to suit all pockets, website below:

Alright mate, did chord mention about a cable that will go from the iPhone to the chord Hugo directly? Apple only want us to use their cable hence the chip

Think I'll be buying the book DAC for dummies to join into these conversations,Christ I don't know what I've been doing with my life!

I leave mine permanently plugged in. The charger will either switch off, or run in constant current trickle charge mode. I keep Hugo on permanently too.

I have a very exact time for when the QBD76 replacement is ready - when it has been perfected!

Sorry, I can't give a date when that will happen though. What I can say is I have the prototypes in my hands, and I am trying to get FPGA timing closure on a very large number of taps.

So it is very exciting at the moment.

Thanks, Rob. That is great news!

The QBD has 16 elements on the pulse array, not 4 on Hugo, and has balanced outputs. But of course it is seriously rivalled by Hugo, so I am currently working on it's replacement, which will feature all of the improvements made over the last 7 years (QBD76 is 7 years old now) that has gone into Hugo, plus much more taps, plus the benefits that the QBD76 currently has (primarily the 16e pulse array).

Now when QBD 76 was under development it was initially planned to use 4096 taps with the same filter structure as in the DAC64, which was 1024 taps. But on listening to various filter options, I noticed something which at the time seemed very odd - it did not tally with my understanding of how the filter worked - the tap length of secondary stages made a big difference to the sound. So this led to a major overhaul of the WTA filter, which ended up being a flat 8 times over sampled (OS) structure, rather than the previous 2 times WTA followed by a 4 times OS filter. This realisation, that the secondary filters were important, gave much more insight into what the interpolation filter needed to do, and opened up more avenues for improvement. This led to a complete change into the WTA algorithm itself, with loads of listening tests to fine tune the recipe. Eventually it got to 18k taps, with the algorithm (or recipe if you like) that Hugo enjoys today. Note that all production QBD76 had the 18k filter, all this work happened at the prototype stage.

Im glad someone asked you about QBD76 compared.....to the Hugo, very interesting read,it only makes sense to improve the QBD 76 considering the price difference to the Hugo.I wonder if prices will come down as well,tv's drop in price and the Hugo is very well priced,I know tv's are a mass market but it would be nice, feel like hifi is for the mega rich these days, look at focal utopias and now naim with their pre/power combo, prices massive jump over inflation

you've been listening to the end result, the music...

I think you'll still need two leads same as with my ZX1 or F887... in truth, I never thought to ask about Apple stuff but I will utter a comment when I speak to them later.
