Shure SRH1540 Review

The X2 is better at both acoustic and electric when it comes to guitar. The Shure is still good it just isn't as good. The Shure in general is more smooth, laid back and sophisticated. While the X2 is more energetic, detail oriented and airy.

According to my experience, "detailed" sounds good at the begining but causes ear fatigue after some time. I seem to prefer smooth I guess, I also crave for a little more bass. I enjoy most when the music surrounds me.(sorry that I can't give any good explanation)

Also, can you please explain "laid back" & "sophisticated" ?

The Shure is a sure thing. Get it. You don't be disappointed.

:L3000: Alright, I'm set on the Shures then... Seems there is no alternative.

Thanks for the help btw.
Cheers :beerchug:

Have you watched the Inner Fidelity review on YouTube yet? There is a pretty good Head-Fi one on there too.

Isn't the video review the same as the written one, just read out loud? At least, the ones I've seen are.

@doctorjazz seems like you have Pandora Hope VI. Though they are in different price brackets, how would you characterize it vs the Shures ? Just curious to know how the Shures put up against the big boys...

No I haven't. I've read the written review of innerfidelity. I'll watch them when I'm able to access my pc. :)

The video is the same as the written one. Check out the one in the Head-Fi channel when you get the chance.

Yep, they're exactly the same.

Been obsessed with my HE-1000 and time limited by work. If you'd like a bit of comparison, maybe I can get to it on the weekend or next week (vacationing...YAY!!!!!)

Hmm just a quick update on my journey, if you are interested.

1540 still is one of the most beautiful headphones I've owned, along with MDR 1A and HD800. 1540 got sold a while back, due to
1. distant sound
2. recessed mids
3. no need for a closed back.

Would I recommend it? It depends. My review still stands valid, but it's not a magical headphone that is generally good for everything. It's ok. If you want a laid back V sound, 1540 would be my choice.

And on cable: If you've opened one of the shure cables up, you will know that they aren't the greatest. But is it worth an upgrade? I don't think so, even though I just spent $300 on a HD800 cable. I've tried other MMCX cables with the 1540 and didn't think it was really worth it.

You prefered MDR 1A above the Shures, why is that ?

That "recessed mids" is what's freekin me out.

Also the laid back thing... I'm not sure if it'll suit me :frowning2: most of what I listen to are rock, pop & some metal.

Like I was telling you before. The Shure isn't in your face. It is more spacious distant which gives it a bigger sound. It is more like you're at a concert. The X2 for example is more in your face. It sounds like you are at a bar or club.

The X2 is more exciting, but can be fatiguing over time. Dsnuts and Tyll (I think that's his name) from Inner Fidelity say they are the best closed back headphones they have heard. Dsnuts is basically my mentor when it comes to everything headphones. I absolutely love my Shure and I listen to metal almost exclusively. Burn in definitely brings the sound a little closer. It sort of balances everything out and makes the mids not prominent.

I don't believe the mids are recessed with the Shure at all, I find them to be very neutral. The X2 has recessed mids. That is definitely a V shaped sound. The prominence of the mids is almost less important than the quality. The Shure has some VERY high quality mids.

I strongly concur with recessed mids and distant sound. That's one of the reasons why I sold my pair (along with boosted, boomy bass and dark trebble).
Having read quite a lot about these headphones in people opinions and reviews, and having seen some FR graphs from different sites, I also think there's quite a big differences from pair to pair, or from batch to batch/revisions?
I don't know, but apparently you absolutely should NOT buy these before auditioning them.
IMHO.
