Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

It was of course meant in relation to the schiit amps such as Asgard 2, lyr 2 and Magni 2. As I understand it they all feature feedback, though the predecessors don't?

Regarding the Asgard two, I quote their web page, "The 80V rails on the gain stage allow us to reduce distortion, while retaining Asgard’s no-overall-feedback design in high-gain mode." So you can use it in high gain mode and have no feedback. It appears that feedback might be used to reduce gain, not control distortion, etc.

My Shiite story

Owned Modi Optical since August

30.11.14 Ordered Modi USB,SYS and Wyrd

3.12.14 RECEIVED order (surprised how fast order shipped/received in UK)

12.12.14 Schiit announce Modi 2/ Uber etc

Now i realise why order was shipped so fast.
To say I'm a little pissed off and this leaves a bad taste in the mouth is an understatement.
Had i have known what was due to be released 12.12 i would have waited and ordered Modi 2 Uber and Magni 2 Uber
Have emailed request to cancel Fulla order and doubt i will be a Schiit customer again in the future, lost all my faith and trust in the company.
Im sure i will get attatcked for this post , but put yourselves in my position, how happy would you be?

Did you contact them about your experience? Perhaps they would do something for you. In any case the improvements to their audio specs are far below a human being's ability to percieve. In any case I can understand how you feel but you should contact them before getting too upset.

Look, there's going to be a window of ~2-4 weeks of affected customers whether you pre-announce or not. Even if Schiit gave people 2 weeks notice (2 weeks before launch), someone who ordered in the two weeks prior to that might feel upset that they placed orders before the announcement was made...and any company with solid customer service would still work to make amends. Oh, and I'll be a year of my salary that even with that 2 weeks of notice, someone would STILL buy the old model, and would STILL complain when the new one was released.

The difference here is that A) Schiit won't have their sales affected by people waiting for the Next Big Thing (TM), and B) they can just deal with whatever Schiitstorm follows.

Maybe you can send Modi back and request to get the new model instead? Your situation definitely sucks for the people living outside US.

My dear Mr.Ableza,

You wouldn't, you're one of those pointy-headed intellectuals that has the ability to think things true, take risks, and accept consequences.  I admire that about you, a true 2+2=4 Man!

However, the vast majority of us, the "Unwashed Masses" are "Socials", "Caregivers", "Agressives" not Scientists,  our 2+2 changes with the cloud formations.

Poking us with sharp sticks isn't helpful.

-It is perfectly natural to feel a little miffed, but in all honesty I think it is rather unwarranted.

You ordered - and very promptly received - excellent products; the release of a successor doesn't make the originals any worse; the new units probably aren't 'better' as such - just slightly different.

And see it from Schiit's point of view - what do you think would happen to original Modi sales if they announced a Modi 2 months before releasing it? (And, the people placing an order a few days before the announcement would still be miffed...)

Don your favourite headphones, plug them in and put on your favourite album. Chances are your mood will improve significantly in seconds. :)

3 days shipping is standard with FedEx, nothing fishy here.

I'll be bumped that I missed out on new gear, but that's about it. Nothing to get upset of, life is too short for this schiit.

My Dear Mr. Semi-Conductor from Norway,

Of course you are quite right on all this, you take things in stride, you still use 35mm film!
Taking the "Long View" is the only sensible way to think about this.
Genelec's earlier version Active Monitors re-sell for higher amounts than their latest Alum. models , don't quite know why ( maybe Class D has something to do with it ) .
We are seeing the emotions of the moment and the result of a less than well-done product roll-out.
All Schiit needs to do is watch the Auto Companies do a Model Change roll-out and learn.

ps.  I love your Electrocompaniet , I hope Santa reads this!, I've been mostly good all-year, except for that one incident in Las Vegas which I don't want to talk about !!!

If you are that ticked off...here is your recourse.

Not Ideal, due to having to pay shipping and then re-order.  It sucks and will cost shipping costs, yes.  And whatever other aggravation you may come up with.
But release dates are release dates.  They have stated their reasons for not "letting the cat out of the bag" early.

I would be upset also in your shoes, but I would also use the return policy to express my dis-satisfaction.

oh and this:

You can return your Schiit products within 15 days to get your money back. Just return it, get a refund and order what you want.

the key point here is "no overall feedback",

Schiit makes no claim to the designs NOT having ANY feedback.

JRiver 4 Mac is better than it was, but it still has 'ideosyncrasies'.

They seem more interested in features than robustness.

It works, don't get me wrong, but it's not very 'mac like' yet, nor fully stable in the sense that it isn't all that hard to get it to go sideways.
But it is useable and much better than itunes.
And yes there is a learning curve with scattered instructions.
They want you to use their forum to know how to setup and learn to use the program.

At it's core it's a pc program that is being ported to Mac and other OS's with what you'd expect to see as these sorts of ports can be quite complex.

Also their ethernet player is significantly handicapped, and it doesn't seem to be a priority in terms of development.

Overall it works well enough if all you want to do is play albums.  Beyond that I'm not sure how well it works.

JJ

Ok. Lots of modifiers there. "Better than it was" etc.

But from your post: it still has idiosyncrasies, it isn't all that hard to get it to go sideways, there's a learning curve, they want you to use their forum to learn to use the program, their ethernet player is significantly handicapped, and the real kicker is, "it works well enough if all you want to do is play albums." And yet you say "it is useable and much better than iTunes?"

In what way, pray tell?

Because it plays DSD and 24/192 natively? Because it plays OGG and FLAC natively? Or what? I'd be curious to know.

Every disclaimer you made about JRiver made me shudder and happier with iTunes, because I don't "just want to play albums." For that I could drag a folder of any audio format onto the free Vox.app player, and in fact that's what I do with files iTunes won't handle.

But what I really want to do with my music collection is to find and play individual songs, I want to curate playlists, I want beautiful album art, I want to be able to fling the audio to my living room, kitchen or bathroom, sync it with my phone, my tablet, my iPod, listen to it in my car, on the bus, on walks. I want to play with my music, not my music player. iTunes is a great database for music management and curation. And, yes, playback.

It sounds like JRiver is a typical UNIX-like program, where there are dozens of developers jamming in hundreds of feature requests and you spend more time getting it to work and managing updates than working with it, and you always have the nagging feeling there's a feature you don't know about that would make your life perfect if only you knew what it was. I use Calibre for that.

iTunes just works. Yes, it could be improved (or in recent releases, dis-improved) but it works better than well enough, it has never crashed on me, you don't need to post in a forum to learn to use it, and the ease with which it deals with network play verges on magic.

And Genius playlists are, well, genius.

Edit: PS - I'm not trying to be confrontational, btw, but from your thumbnail overview I can't see why I would be tempted to switch. Especially with 2.5 TB of music and hundreds of thousands of individual songs that iTunes handles without a hitch (albeit, somewhat slowly on occasion).
