Hey guys, long time reader, but finally decided to join.  Right now my stash includes some ATH-M50LEs and some UE600 IEMs (cheap, and a LOT better than the S4s I had).  I'm on the hunt for some seriously good IEMs, short of going full-custom.  Also looking into some plush around the ear cans - not too much on the on the ear kind.  BUT with that said, I am quite impressed with the Outdoor Tech Privates, for what they are.

I've done quite a bit of reading on my own trying to figure all of this stuff out.  I've always been a fan of higher end headphones and IEMs, but never realized that a portable amp/dac is just as necessary in most cases.  So I picked up a Fiio E17 Alpen - had a little trouble getting the drivers to stick on my Windows 7 laptop, but all is well now.  I can completely understand why these portable guys are so popular and well-worth the money.

My question revolves around the E17 and my Note 3.  I'm rooted running a custom stock-based ROM.  To improve the sound before even discovering amp/dacs, I installed the amazing Viper4Android software (free) with more options than I can even comprehend.  Would this software on my phone hinder or help what the Fiio is doing, or have no bearing at all?  http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2191223

Right now I'm just using the stereo to stereo cable that came with the Fiio as I don't have a USB OTG cable at the moment.  I was hoping to find one I saw browsing these Android threads, but can't figure out the precise terminology to find one.  Seems overkill to get USB OTG then connect that long Fiio USB cord into it, then to the Fiio.  So I was hoping someone knows what this is: http://tinyw.in/zY4j

The very second post in the thread, with the very short microUSBs (?) running direct from phone to Fiio.

It seems that I could lessen the amount of cables hanging around if I could get a USB otg to microusb?  Or am I overthinking this?

I'm still trying to understand all the terminology here.  By only using the stereo to stereo cable, the Fiio is only providing the amp for my headphones, right?

Thank you all for the neverending dearth of information found on these threads.  I've got SO much to learn.
