CHORD HUGO preview report

The main attraction to me of the Hugo, apart from Chord quality and sound, is the form factor, portability and almost limitless file handling (I have around 1TB of SACD rips into DSD). It should be great to throw in the bag with a pair of IEMs and my MBA when I am away with work, or even at work for that matter.

I can also see myself carrying the Hugo, Macbook, and IEMs on the go.

Jamato... I'm sure they'll update things if it's just firmware... a different version from Chord normally means better components etc.

Is there a hi-fi dealer at the North-Pole where you can get a demo?... think this is right up your street, btw looking forward to your views on the iBasso DX90 when it's out.

I live in the bush. Finding anything above some cheap buds is not going to happen. The buds are high end here. Remarkably, where I work, one of the guys actually did the first music on a computer ever known (Gates wanted to know how he did it). He knew Jobs when he was in a garage and Gates as well.

How Will you have access to "limiteless file capacité " ?? The HUGO do not offer storage or Wifi streaming ! Will you use a laptop attached ?

Thanks

I'm trying to visualize how a DAP would attach? I would use this as a portable rig. I could use a AK120 but seems wasteful to me or a iPod classic, the downside being 160 storage and cannot play a bunch of different formats.

And with Hugo/AK120 or iPod no DSD which seems to be the hot new format.

Any ideas people on how to make the Hugo a portable rig?

Get a Fiio X5 and problem solved.

From Chord's website
Inputs
• Optical TOSLink 24-bit/192kHz-capable
• RCA coaxial input 24-bit/384kHz-capable
• Driverless USB input 16-bit/48kHz-capable (designed for tablets/phones)
• HD USB input 32-bit/384KHz and DSD128-capable (for computer/laptop playback; requires driver installation on Windows for 384 operation)

Not sure if mobile devices would work with the HD USB input.

I don't have dsd, yet I am having difficulties finding the albums I want even 24/192 so dsd is not something I worry about. X5 will be the perfect transport for me. Unlimited capacity, coax out and also a good standalone player too, for the days I just don't want to carry a transportable stack.

The HD USB input works with iDevices that uses players that can play "bit perfect" like 8Player, Onkyo HF Player, Flac player, AmpliFlac or similar.
(8Player can also stream bit perfect from a DLNA / UPnP server, and I will use a portable one, the Seagate Wireless Plus that is battery powered.)

I guess that the same goes for Android devices.

upload CD's into Flac or WAV... you'll save a fortune.

use eBay.com to find rare gems.... way cheaper than iRipoff

Most of my archives are classic cd quality anyway, high res is difficult to find and not always the albums you are interested, so yeah flac or vaw rips are way to go.

I'd like to think that's very clever to state in the specs that HD USB input should be officially supported for computers running Mac OS / Windows only.

If someone were not able to get anything above 48/16 out of mobile devices, Chord won't have to provide technical support since that ain't officially supported to begin with.

Let's take a look at Portable Source Gear and see what we're going through in order to get 96/24 or 192/24 working consistently. Not THAT many iOS / Android apps are capable at the moment while there were other hardware-related issues such as drawing too much power from the USB port etc.

Now we're connecting our phones / tablets to the HD USB input and such unofficial features should be supported unofficially by ourselves.

Actually we can't be sure to get it working with the "legacy USB" either.. as I understand the Camera Connection Kit has worked before, and stopped working at some point, and is now working again with iOS7.. I guess that makes the need for Apple Approved devices like DAC's less desirable for both product vendors and also consumers.. why pay for a license for something that nobody actually needs? And why will a consumer pay that extra cost? So I guess that Apple could turn off that feature again in a future iOS release to be able to squeze more money out of vendors.
