I currently have Beyer T1s running from a Matrix X-Sabre DAC and Bottlehead Mainline amp. It's a pretty impressive setup, but I still feel like I'm not getting the full weight of notes from instruments like pianos, etc.

I am thinking of trying either the Sennheiser HD800s or the HiFiMan HE-500s (in addition to my T1s, not instead of). I'm also open to other suggestions. Which headphone is going to deliver the most lifelike presence from instruments?

For the most life-like presentation I'd nominate Stax' offerings. Especially the vintage ones

Well if you like a weighty sound, HE-500's are the way to go!

I've heard others suggest that the HE-500s aren't in the same league. Have you heard the LCD-2 and / or HD800 as comparison? If the HE-500s compete, they're a no-brainer!

HE-500 is generally considered to be a slight step below the other flagships, yet many consider them at the same level. Some argues it boils down to proper synergy and amping.. It's definitely in the same league as the T1 for example. I'd call the he-500 hi-end with proper equipment. Cheapest phone I have heard that I could consider hi end after all.
I'd carefully say that it's the same league as the t1, yet just a level below, though it can be taken pretty far with pad mods.
They do definitely compete.

LOL - do you mean me?

I have discovered a wonderful thing about this hobby... if you keep your gear in good condition with boxes, you don't lose much when you sell. I have basically bought gear, saved money, sold gear to buy the next level up, rinsed and repeated. It's a great way to traverse the Head-Fi ladder.

Right now I'm trying to sell my Bottlehead Crack to fund my next adventure, but no-one's buying!?

I just made a similar thread. But for different sound-signatures.

Hope that's alright!
