hi all, ibasso kindly emailed me back saying they expect to have it available to buy 7th april, obviously wish it could be now but at least theres a date to get excited for. my birthday is 7th april too so ill take that as an omen:wink:

I was also given the same date today from the e-mail I sent last week asking for a release date for the player.
Now to make the decision to keep my Pono Player - Limited Edition Foo Fighters "pre-order" or to cancel it before the 15th.

If the firmware's behavior as far as handling of the UI is same as DX50, at least we know how it'll behave therefore cutting down on the learning process. Would have been nice if there was a little physical distinction from DX50 vs DX90 other than the swappable back panel.

Agreed:  A little physical distinction from the DX50 like 2-mm thicker to accommodate a thicker battery and, who knows, a second and/or third microSD card(s).

It is interesting, all the bickering in storage capacities.  When the DX50 came out with it's single micro SD slot, the maximum capacity using a regular micro SD card was 64 GB.  A little bit later, recently, 128 GB micro SD cards are born.  Maximum capacity just doubled without iBasso having to do anything.  128 GB almost doubles what my entire music collection even is, so I can now transport 100% of my music collection and have lots of extra space to grow into.  iBasso adding in a second SD card slot to increase it to 256 GB is... not necessary for probably most people?  128 GB the size of a thumb nail is a lot of storage space.  Back in 2001 I found it a big deal buying a laptop that had only an 18 GB~ hard drive.  Now there's no way that will work.

When a 256 GB micro SD card is created all DX50 and DX90 owners will receive a free increase in capacity yet again.  Adding extra SD card slots seems silly, because where does one stop?  Is 256 GB not enough?  Maybe they should add 4 slots.  There's ultimately no way to account for how large everyone's libraries are, so I really don't see any reason for them to even try.  Supposedly the DX50 can DX90 can support a 2 TB micro SD card.  Whenever that is invented I'd hope you'd have all the space you could ever need.  Lol.  I would prefer to pressure the flash storage makers into making higher capacities than having DAP makers litter their devices with duplicate features.

"Makes audiophile targeted high res playback dap, adds only one micro sd slot"

Dude, your collection can be around 100 gb, it doesn't mean everyone has that kind of collection. Mine is already 320 gb and it is growing. I understand I can't have it all with me all the time but carrying as much as possible while changing the context on the cards as less as possible is the ultimate point.

If there wasn't big issue with USB OTG system, I would already go for that route but overheating of dap and providing 4 hours of battery life is not acceptable.

We are talking about high resolution files in here. An album in 24/192 takes around 2 gb. So with your 64 gb card, you can have only ~30 albums with you all the time? I call this ridiculous decision.

We had 80GB ipods nearly a decade ago.  I don't think it's unreasonable to be asking storage capacity to be growing with the other increases in technology.

This player is clearly marketed at those who want to use higher resolution formats with larger file sizes than we were using in portable players ten years ago.

The fact that 128GB cards just came out is lucky for iBasso, but they only just came out, by luck, just before the announcement of the DX90.  This and the DX50 were planned with a 64GB limitation, which, I reiterate, we were already beyond many years ago.

It's good for you that you can fit your entire collection on 128GB.  My music collection is at 400GB and growing.

The jump from 64GB to 128GB took a VERY long time.  While I'd love to see it jump to 256 next year, I'm not holding my breath.

I don't see why it's so interesting for people to want storage capacity to increase in line with the rest of the advances.

I'd LOVE a 2x256 card setup.

I don't hear much difference playing back 24/192 files and downsampling the same file to 16/48. 128GB uSD and one slot is enough for me. I'll just buy a second card if my collection grows beyond that capacity.

I won't call it luck. iBasso knew 128GB is coming soon even with DX50. Look at the published spec. They mentioned the uSD slot can support up 2TB capacity when those cards become available.

I am not discussing the sonic differences between different resolutions. That's another threads subject. My point is, you make a dap that can play high resolution files and add small storage. That's a bottleneck.

One can never have enough storage. Whether you listen to mp3 or 24/192 or dsd.

And given how long it took to go from 64->128, when exactly do you think we'll be getting 256 or more?  I think we both know that we won't ever see a 2TB micro SD card on the market.  The format will be well extinct before it gets there.

The idea that it's practical to wait for more than 128 when we're only a few months into the shipping of 128 is a bit weird.

Also, just because you don't hear the difference doesn't mean it ain't there.   Aren't we buying these newer and higher resolution players to be able to hear more differences?

This is exactly what DX90 is about. An upgrade of DAC/Amp section without spending much time/resource on a new case, layout and minimal retooling of the assembly line. This way they can push out a new product rather quickly leveraging on what is already available/experienced with DX50.

In about a year they change the gut of DX50 and stuck in there something that could possibly reach the level of DX100. I don't see them struggling on the design front. No, they are not a big company as you might think. I'm just saying they have their priorities set which of course I happen to agree. Speaking of big names, Apple does the same thing, incremental upgrades, but they stick to their core design objectives. Those who don't agree gets a to choose any adroid/windows phone they see fit for their use.

Sorry, I wasnt clear.  I meant that iBasso is free to make an incremental upgrade to the player, not that I approved of it.

IMO, the improvement in audio quality is going to be marginal at best (esp in a blind A/B/X test).  They'd have been better off making a player with a larger capacity as a higher priority.

Unfortunately you cant discuss one without the other as that is what's driving the issue! The sales on the DX50 with storage of 64gb (bearing in mind the 128gb card has only just come out) seemed unaffected, so the main market for the product seems ok with it!

All those storage wishes are just that wishes. We know the DX90 has one uSD slot so 128Gb of portable music isn't bad. If you need more space just swap another card and enjoy the music. Right now I am more concerned with the player SQ and all of the issues that plagued the DX50 gone.

Fair enough.  I mean, I'm buying one anyway.

But there's nothing wrong with wishes, especially when dual cards are already implemented in this day and age elsewhere.  And if I didn't have to buy and swap several cards that would unquestionably improve my user experience, since this device is about portability and travel to me.

We are all concerned about SQ - it's not an either or choice with SQ vs storage.
