Hey, I dont get the whole DSD over PCM stuff that the DX90 knows to play.... I mean, I can convert any DSD to PCM, make it a 24/96 flac, and play it. so why would this still be DSD?
Why is this specially mentionend, if this is in any case a DAP that can play flac, who cares what it was converted from... it cant play DSD, thats the point... please correct me if I'm wrong, thanks

No corrections if you got the software to convert it. With any conversions you have to think about what you gain and what you loose. I suggest you read the DSD and PCM decoding and see why one is better or more like different than the other. I believe you don't get the advantage of DSD decoding if it's not native. That's just my thinking. You should go over the sound science section for a better discussion on the subject.

Back to the DX90 and the new firmware. :)

Why not? That's what i had to do to get the flashing tool working anyways.

IBasso is not you, they want to comply like the HP, Dell of the world. Microsoft has put a compliance system for a reason else everyone would do what you say and we'd be running infested software wrecking havoc all over the world. Think about that for a minute.

.......Ultra fast response, listening to OTG right now via my micro card holder so I have 190gb of memory with a 128gb and a 62gb or you could go with 2 128gb for 256gb of memory or just use the slot for whatever. The DX90 scans so fast now that inserted a new card is no hassle and a very, very short wait.

I did the upgrade 3x before I finally get the unit to play properly.. That is... No cutting off the 2s at end of the song.
The last time I did a rescan after the upgrade, it took about 7 min.. to complete it.
But I definitely can't hear the different filter settings.. My files are all lossless..

Also when shutting down, the player does not prompt anymore. :gs1000smile:

It's an improvement but the sound is so different, feels like the scale has shifted higher and left the bass at home. :frowning2:

I like the it. I thought it a touch warm before. Lets see how the next one goes.

I'm wondering why folks don't hear the filter switch?

Depends on your age and how good you can differentiate a narrow band and be sensitive to harmonics. It's not a crazy wide band the roll off deals with, it's rather narrow at both ends but way worse at the highs. Looking at the curves you linked, it's wider than the WS8740 though. Go figure but if they can keep the updated functionality and improve to me it's all good. Now we need the 64-bit USB DAC driver and we are all set! :)

After comparing the two firmwares a bunch of times I'd say its obvious the bass has been reduced on 2.05, but to my ear the treble to a lesser extent has also been very slightly reduced along, with the mids, its like the gain on the sound has been set flatter, which is a good thing. It doesn't sound as "fun" , forward and punchy as 2.00. But It is a more balanced frequency response that translates dynamics such as loud/soft and slow/fast better as a result, which is one reason why it sounds more natural and "engaging" by being more realistic, aside from the slow filter improvement. IMO if 2.05 had any more bass it would become north of neutral. But that's just my imo, I've come from a ZX1 which had the leanest, tightest and most defined bass I've heard, so even the DX90 on 2.05 sounds extra full and impact full to me, yet still balanced.

Could you please explain what difference these filters should have? I dont think that my hearing suffered that much in 29 years or that I'm too old to hear differences lol :)

It must be dependent on content. There are several files I tried and the difference is obvious by flipping the filter options. There there are other which doesn't seem to have any effect when flipping filters.

The filters are most noticeable on my R.EM. and Eagles songs. They were 24/192 files down-sampled to 16/48.

I could not compare it to the 2.0 FW because I don't have a PC. But comparing it to my DX50 + RB, I agree DX90 on 2.05 really is more neutral which is very close to the neutrality of Rockbox or at the same level. 2.0 from memory is indeed has a little more bass.

But the bass doesn't disappear on 2.05. It is there when it should be. Alterbridge brings out a lot of the bass and it's very full and detailed.  Same goes with bass light songs like the Beatles. Unlike in the previous firmware there is always bass rumble even on bass light songs which is fun but imo not accurate.

It's difficult to point out what you should be looking for to discern a difference. In my case I didn't know either but when I flip the option in the Digital Filter menu I can hear a different tone. Which in most cases I like the slow roll off better.

I was skeptical about the difference in filters, however I have to say, listening to Hilary Hahn fiddling Bach's Concertos, it's pretty evident there is a difference. (This album is 24/88.2, if that makes a difference.)
