This 'hobby' is starting to get expensive real fast!  I used to look at people with their hifi rigs with balanced outputs, pre amps, speaker wires and shake my head.  Now I want all that sound quality in a package I can carry with me.  We start off slowly with an ipod, move to an iphone then start messing with earphones.  Max that then move to dacs and amps, reach the limits then move to DAPs, redo dacs and amps and earphones and the prices rise exponentially with quality.  On top of that synergies make us side grade etc.
I bought a DX100 two years ago to replace a Sony Walkman and RSA SR71a amp and was completely satisfied with the quality, fast forward two years and the audio scene moves on with DSD, DXD, 24/192 and need to replace my entire rig!  Now I'm just waiting for my JH Roxannes to ship.  What is the pinnacle of portable audio now?

There isn't one.  The holy grail should be to find what makes you smile when you listen to music, not how much it costs.

what TOTL would u rexommend with dx90 to drive HE500 properly?

I'm just considering my options here, but I think getting desktop amp and dac (magni modi or audio gd 11.32) would be cheaper. By doing so, I would be sacrificing the portability within the house which I really wanted.

I use an iCAN desktop amp with an external battery. Sounds very good with the DX90 and my JVC HA-FX850 iem's. The battery means I can pick it up and walk around with it, but it is definitely not small enough to fit in a pocket. Sorry about the picture as it shows my Tera instead of the DX90. There is definitely an improvement in sound versus the DX90 by itself. In contrast, the smaller portable Nano amp (also by iFi) did not make as much of an improvement in the sound compared to the DX90 by itself, but there was still a noticeable improvement.

OK guys, I need to make a decision so help me out here. I have the the AK120 and I am seriously considering a move to the DX90.

I appreciate I will lose out on storage and battery life, but as I understand it there will be a little improvement in SQ which is what it is all about at the end of the day.

Would the general consensus be that this is a good move?

I'm also curious about DSD playback. My AK120 plays DSD but it eats the battery like nobody's business and makes the device incredibly sluggish whilst doing so. What is DSD playback like on the DX90?

Also Sorensiim, I know you have been using the PB2 with the DX90. I have been thinking about getting a portable balanced amp and I was just wondering whether you would recommend this pairing, or is the improvement negligible?

Cheers

I'm in the same situation, I'll be going with the sr-71b or theorem 720.

Edit- leaning towards the sr-71b because it will pair better with my iem.

I sometimes drive my HE500s with the DX50/PB2 single ended and it sounds really good and on par with my Audio Gd 15.32 setup. I'm in the process of getting it driven balanced so hoping that would improve things even further. I think the PB2 matches really well with orthos because when I had my mad dogs 3.2 it sounded better out of the PB2 than the desktop setup.

that's interesting. I can currently get dx50 for 200€ brand new. Seems to be a good option with pb2. I'm also looking at the audio gd 11.32 if I decide to go for a desktop. Btw what do u mean by single ended? Sorry, I'm new to all this. Don't have much knowledge.

SR71-B balanced drives the HE-500 very well

Thanks nc8000,used ones are selling at half the cost of the 720 too.
Also stacks well with the dx90....
My mind is made up.

Ordered some extra screen protectors from iBasso, they sent me a bunch for free. Just payed the shipping.
You need surgical precision when applying these protectors.

They also sent me 4 of these.... I have no idea why. Lol

Brave soul, I can't be seen walking around carrying this rig or I'll get arrested.

Isn't that too overkill for an iem?

I do not travel with it....for obvious reasons.

And the JVC HA-FX850's are the best sounding headphone I have tried yet. I listen almost always while stationary, and since the JVC's sound better with the iCAN than out of the DX90 by itself, I will probably keep using it. May seem odd, but it sounds great.

Thank make sense. Just to contrast your setup, this is what I have been using at home now.
