We need to steer the conversation away from the value-for-money aspect of DAPs before the Clip+ owners come in here and kick our asses.
 
Back to the DX90: Ibasso said that a there simply wasn't space in the DX90/DX50 case to add a balanced connector. To me, that sounds like it should be possible mod the DX90 into having a balanced lineout from those two lovely DAC chips...

Actually, it would be interesting if the AK240s inclusion of balanced headphone-out might change iBasso's mind, but then again, they might be keeping balanced in reserve for a possible DX100 replacement, at some stage.
 
I wouldn't be at all surprised if Fiio decide to include it on the X7.
 
I'm sure Vinnie will do the necessary exploring to establish whether the DX90 can be modded to balanced.

I am actually thinking of sending X5 for balance phone out mod if that it even possible and eventually I am able to buy one............god, I need to check the fiio board now

If anything convinces Ibasso to jam a Hirose connector into the DX90, it would be this abomination lovely DAP: http://head-direct.com/Products/?act=detail&id=186 - The HM700 has balanced output. Sadly there seems to be no line out and only 32gb of fixed storage with no expansion options. Then again, a balanced source at $249...

It would be nice if the DX90 would have balanced outputs but trying to keep the DX50 shape with a big balanced connector would make it look disproportional. It'll be hard to make it modable with such a relatively small enclosure unless someone rips one of the output plugs for a TRRS based one.

If DX90 had balanced headphone out, despite the lack of capacity, I would buy it I guess. A wonderful package it would be. TRRS or Hirose, something balanced.
 
Edit: On a second thought, maybe our DIY master Soren can make it happen? What do you say mate?

It wouldn't be top of my list as a priority, I'd put more storage higher up the list...
 
Do balanced phones need more power?

Lol nope! I can solder cables but going to town on a PCB is far beyond my skills! But thanks for the vote of confidence!

I was thinking some of the craftier modders like the ones offering to swap opamps and caps on the DX50...

Theoretically, you should be able to pull a balanced output from the dual dacs, but if it's practically possible is something we won't know until the DX90 starts shipping

I'm not an electronics engineer, but I'd venture to suggest that the amplification portion of the DAP might be at least as significant, in comparing the SQ of the DX90 vs DX100, given that the DX100 amp stage is (relatively-speaking) unusually decent.
 
Then again, if you happen to be a fan of external amping, then my point becomes moot.

If iBasso were to make DX90 sound almost as good as DX100 , it'd be as good as a killer blow to their flagship . It'll definitely sound better than DX50 , but not by much .
