If you can live with stone age UI then the Korg MR2, a $400 DSD recorder that also doubles as a player, has been available for a few years.

oh yes, almost forgot about that one but I never trust those recorders though. I prefer DAP with the sole purpose of audiophile playback

Jamato, since you seem to have similar gear to a hypothetical setup I might check out (Your TH900's being similar to my D5000s) which of your DAPs has had the best synergy with those cans so far? I'm eyeing the DX90, X5 and HM-802 at the moment...

Can't say right now as I would need to compare them and haven't. I think good DAP's will be become more and more prevalent and it most likely will become of choice of subtle differences and UI choice. But there will always be exceptions and the DX90 may very well be one.

Hey jamato8, just wondered your thoughts on the new dx90 amp section vs dx50, I love my dx50 and thinking of upgrading straight away but. I'm torn between keeping the dx50 for portable use and spending the extra cash on a desktop amp to go with it for home use as that's where I use my 'better' hps,?

I think that the amp of the DX90 will be better than the DX50 but it's not going to replace a real desktop amp

Or just buy a Hugo, killing 2 birds with one stone, and have done with it.

...for a price, of course...

Just sayin'...

So let's see who will be joining to the DX90 team after Calyx M announced their ridiculous pre order price. I say it again, half the price double the dac

Well I am really not happy about their pricing as well as volume slider fetish. I am not also not happy with ridiculously low capacity of DX90 either but some people are fine with only 1 micro sd card, so they might come to this part.

Got you there, as far as the DX90 capacity, sure enough one microSD card can be limiting but if you go with the 128GB cards, that is not too bad. For home usage you can always OTG the player for extra capacity and if they provide USB - DAC then you can connect to your humongous music network, from a PC/Mac of course.

Just as a side-discussion (since we have no new info about the DX90 from iBasso....)

There was some brief discussion about mSATA memory options in the pure transport thread:

You need to check the current-draw of an mSATA drive, as apparently they're more current-hungry than you might think

Just some food for thought, to pass the time until iBasso feed us some proper info about their forthcoming player!

It may be a hard pill to swallow but it gets easier now that 128GB micro SD is released. I'm willing to to go the route of multiple microSD and just swap them when needed if DX90 can match or exceed Calyx M SQ-wise. If the current DX50 UI is an indicator, I think i'll be fine with it even if it's not as elegant as M.
