My impression with FW2.1 with Slow Roll-off filter and LO to Arrow 4G:

With Gapless Off: The mid/vocal range is much boosted, making the bass and sub-bass range much less prominent. I listened to one particular vocal track known with subtle sub-bass, and with FW2.1 the sub bass is almost undetectable. This is the worst ever sound coming out from the DX90
With Gapless On: The mid/volcal range is not boosted, tonal balance is quite similar to FW2.0.5, but sound stage just has no depth.

The fact that setting Gapless on/off makes such a big difference on sound indicates this FW2.1 is just buggy.

After going back to FW2.0.5, the sound stage and sub-bass come right back. This is the firmware I shall keep using.

LOL, Silverears call it V shaped and you hear mids are boosted. To me, the previous FW had added presence which I liked a bit better than the 1st FW which was a bit laid back but this one is the most neutral. Sort of in between with good UI function. I guess we all have our own preferences. I can hear gapless engaged on any DAP informative enough to matter so no problem there. The low bass issue you're having is not noticeable by me on my JH13s. Probably a synergy thing with your amp and phones. I agree with a slightly more forward perspective with gapless engaged but overall, I prefer it.

I have one crazy bug with new fw :D When I play album, fw playing tracks in alphabetical order of song names from id3 tags instead order of file names with number of track on begin.
Second notice, that when player turn on or off I hear 2 pops of rele from amp (no from headphones, but from player). I dont know if it was before. But now it is first time I notice it. After update I was making factory reset.

Well, one thing that is consistent that is posted is the fact that the output changes with each firmware.  Also some are saying it's neutral sounding yet there is inconsistencies with the sound outputted with each firmware, with certain ranges boosted or dropped.  I've read the same for DX50, the response changing with each firmware.

It's quite subtle and less than I got with my other DAPs but yes it does change a bit and I'm sure they all measure flat. There's that spec vs what we hear bugger again. I used to change the sound of my HiSounds by simply changing the allocation table during a format in the FW process. No rhyme or reason but we hear it. I owned 3 Sansa models and each FW change was much more noticeable than these which are quite subtle. I don't think the DX90 has ever changed it's flavor like the others I've had. Just a bit of seasoning.

I deleted the .audio folders in both the DX90 internal memory and microSD, eject microSD, did factory reset before FW upgrade, use RKTool to upgrade firmware, did factory reset after firmware upgrade, turned off DX90, insert microSD, start DX90 and rescan files. I think my procedure would eliminate any chance of old settings affecting the player with new FW.

One thing I suspect is iBasso didn't actually change the DSP or sound in each of the firmware, but just changed the way they utilize each processor core to handle different tasks (or adding more tasks for the DX90 to handle in newer FW to fix problems). The playback sound change is a side effect of how the DX90 handle multitasking with different processor cores.

I used to experienced similar sound changes in Windows by assigning dedicated processor core to run the foobar2000.exe, or just let the Windows OS to decide which cores to run the player process. In Windows, usually assigning a dedicated processor core for player will give better sound, but having a higher risk of "No Response" from the player application when the computer is busy.

The DX90 has 2 processor cores.

I can definitely hear more micro dynamics with FW 2.0.5. There is a particular track I have with some very low volume/subtle sub-bass rumble sweeping from left to right channel. I can hear it in FW2.0.5 but cannot in FW2.1. I do not use the the FW2.1 long enough to tell if it has the upper bass boosted or not. But I can definitely confirm the FW2.1 cannot reproduce the same sub/lower bass details I can get in FW2.0.5 through repeat listening to that particular track.

It might be in FW2.0.5, a dedicated processor core is assigned for music play back and another processor core assigned for everything else. One bug I cannot get rid of in FW2.0.5 is the random "Pause-Resume-Pause" in playback. When it happens, I can hear it is actually "Fade out-Fade in-Fade out", similar to a single processor core is too busy handling the playback task and got "freezed" because it can receive no help from the other processor core.

The sound difference between Gapless on and Gapless off in FW2.1 just does not make much sense, as Gapless playback is not a DSP function, but just a different processor/memory read ahead logic. I doubt any iBasso programmers will be so careless having the Gapless on and off logics utilizing different DSP algorithms. What I suspect is they just change the way assigning different processor core to handle different tasks.

Of course it is all my wild guess.

Able to reproduce details in recording is the first requirement I need from a "HiFi" DAP. So I have to live with FW2.0.5 and the "Fade in - Fade Out - Fade in" bug.

If you ever played with buffers size in even the best programs like Wavelab or interfaces like Weiss and TC, you'd understand that adding any inline function can affect the sound, even when bit perfect and not adding noise. Like I said, I've heard the sig of gapless engaged on every better player I've tried it on. Again, this a subtle thing that many won't notice and in no way unique to the DX90. I highly doubt that they've changed the processor utilization and have simply played with buffers and resources to better optimize things. As with any change, regardless of how subtle, some will like it and other not. Personally, I think they are on an ascending path with their FWs. I don't really care about gapless but like it's synergy with my use. Wouldn't surprise me if the current FW was voiced with it engaged as most will do so.

Can I "downdate" from 2.1.0 to 2.0.5 over FW update in player or I must format and use batchtool like for 2.0.0?

I used the RK Batch Tool and felt it could give a cleaner install. Haven't tried restoring older FW with player alone.

I believe that's the only way. If anyone's having trouble installing a driver the one from this link seems good for W7. http://www.freak-tab.de/freaktab/Rockchip_Batch_Tool_v1.7.rar
I agree that it's the preferred install. I hear a bit more of what you're getting at when installed this way. I've used the installer before on another player but haven't bothered until now with the DX90. I do prefer that it formats before install. I'm now using it inverted again without gapless but still think these differences are more spice than fundamental. I'm a fan of the sound of this FW used exactly as I used the previous ones. Thanks for reminding me about the RK.

Solid update for me, nothing to complain about this firmware with my IEM, XBA-H3 at the moment. If the sound has changed, it's a subtil change and for the better to my ears.

This DAP sound really good and the XBA-H3 pairing is top notch for me

I'm liking firmware 2.1 , mostly sounds clearer to me. Only negative in terms of sound compared to firmware 2.05 is the bass seems to have become slightly looser. I would like the bass of the DX90 tightened up and more defined, its always been slightly loose and boomy (slightly!) meaning some detail and timbre is lost in the bass. I'd say the bass of 2.00 was my favorite so far by a very small margin. But for everything else I prefer 2.1

SO far i like 2.1.0 too... sound like abit more warm and soundstage is wider. Seen like can hear more details too... layering of the music is fantastic.... bass is slightly tone down compared to 2.0.0

Updated the firmware for the 1st time today, to 2.1 from 2.0.0 and playing music in shuffle mode, it now only shuffles within one album. Previously, in shuffle mode I could play from any file located in either the internal storage, or on an sd card, and music would shuffle from all tracks.  Am I missing something with the shuffle feature?  It was just automatic before, in that selecting the shuffle option in Playback Mode, tracks would play from all different folders and albums.  Has anyone else experienced something similar?

I thought maybe it was the new firmware so I loaded the previous one, 2.0.5, and I have the same issue;  in shuffle playback mode, only tracks from one individual album are played.  I tried to load the original firmware, but was unsuccessful using the same steps outlined in the dx50 manual (download firmware, unzip, copy to dx90, remove usb, system update, factory reset)

Later I will attempt to figure out how to load the original firmware to using other means (batchtool, etc.)

Not sure if loading the original firmware will solve the problem, but that's my best guess?
