nice review , but he says DX90 doesn't play gapless.

no offense , but i have perfect gapless with my FLAC files

saying that stock/lurker FWs don't have true gapless is not correct - plus it may send potential buyers away.

i use lurker's FW (2.1.5 , 2.1.8 , 2.2.0) and i had no gapless problems WHATSOEVER.

and i only have complete albums , not top-40 singles (and many albums there that need to be heard gapless)

cheers.

Except from the gap between the first two tracks played after power on I also get perfect gapless from my flac files

Well, while listening to a dozen different pieces of music chosen for their properties intrinsic qualities (see list at end of post), I did not notice any particular irregularity. Maybe, and I say "maybe" there he has a little more velocity and accuracy in relation to 2.20L0.

Note that I used a Shure SRH-940 very revealing with whom I prefer the sound of 2.18 to 2.20 fw. With the SRH-940, the 2.20 appear mid-centric with a bump on the lower midrange and the trebles, light attenuation in the high medium and tenser bass but less extended than the 2.18. And your version did not diverge in that direction. Also, the 2.20 (L0 and Wx) has a very nice separation of instruments and an incredible definition and a very balanced sound. But the sound stage is narrower than the 2.18... For now, awaiting to change my headphones, I return to 2.18L0,which the DX90 is more relaxing and musical. I repeat, this is only my impression using precisely this headphones.

[Playlist :
"The lost song 1&2" by Anathema, "Holy Breath" by Dhafer Youssef", Clark : "Snowbird", Agnes Obel : "Fuel to Fire", "Entanglement" by Michael Price, Roberta Flack : "Killing me Softly whith his song",  Miles Davis : "Shhh Peaceful", "Passage" by Chris Spheeris & Paul Voudouris, "O King of Heaven" by Valentin Silvestrov (Kiev Chamber..), "Become Ocean" by John Adams (Seatle Sympho. - Ludovic Morlot), and some passage of Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti (Sutherland, Pavaroti - Bonynge) ][and only Lossless and HD files...]

I'm listening to that new modded firmware by WindowsX, I think I hear slightly more clarity from it, (not 100% sure, only did a quick test) but it definitely has very similar sound sig as stock which makes it harder to determine if clarity has improved.

After getting Angie (used to have FAD Heaven VI before), which reveal a lot details from the sound, I started thinking whether upgrading from DX90 makes a sense. Sony ZX2 and AK240 came to my attention and I started reading different comparisions between DX90 and others. What surprised me, I read impressions stating that DX90 holds well against AK240..

Those who compared DX90 to AK240 could you share please? DX90 fw should be 2.2.0 for obvious reasons...

Hum, you have to read carefully the conclusion of this article : http://www.headfonia.com/godbless-you-mr-headwhacker-or-rockbox-loves-the-dx90/

Nathan from Headfonia is an experienced Audiophile who have a chance to test many DAP and he rated DX90 at the same level as AK240 in term of sound quality, if not better. For me it mean a lot, especially if you consider DX90's price compare to AK240. For Lieven he said AK120 and 240 have better SQ than DX90. But with its cost, very low background noise and output power he really impress with DX90 too and choosed it as DAP of the year 2014. Not sure he tested latest FW 2.2 yet.

Since I heard iBasso already took Lurker's patches into main firmware and his current release is only font changing, I decided to help improving his firmware release a little more. As my whole firmware is part of my Full Mod's product so giving out my completed hard work of firmware optimizations for free would sound bad for my customers who paid for it. So I'll replace Lurker's boot image with mine and hope that'll it'll help you getting better sound out from it.

Here's what I did to boot image on my own firmware over 2.2.0 release

-Added some Fidelity script optimizations into boot image
-Changed I/O priority of core audio apps/services to real-time with highest priority level
-Set shell command user to root for running script in system partition with root access
-Removed adb and few other services (Lurker may decide to keep it but service is still running at minimal level for detection and end-user people hardly use it)

For those who's curious about my DX90 full mod project, you can take a look around here.

Hey first of all thanks for your contribution to make the DX 90 even better and sharing your firmware with us.
Because I don't understand Thai, as far as I understand there's also hardware modification in your full mod involved, but may I ask about the differences between your full/complete firmware and the one you posted here?

Read it. That is why I started asking for more opinions.

And yes, installing Rockbox in order to get gapless files to work is a chore. And if the simple act of listening to an album as it was intended to be played back takes that much work, I question the utility of the modern ‘audiophile’ player to the discerning music lover.

And yes, if you call yourself a music lover and gaps don’t bother you, it’s time to quit this review. Because I’m all up in your face. Gaps are ruinous to everything from trance to classical to concert tapes to low-riding jeans. If all your hooting and hollering about SQ doesn’t for a moment take into account the gaps that unplug you from your music, you are probably more of a gearhead than you are a music lover. Enjoy your Top 40 singles.

I have. The DX90, even with the official fw is awesome and one of the most silent DAPS. I'm planning on Installing Lurker this weekend if I can find the time
