As I see it, this new wave of high end DAPs was started by Hifiman (HM801) and Ibasso (DX100). They showed that there was indeed a market for expensive, no-compromise devices and Iriver, a waning company, decided to jump in. They created the Astell & Kern brand to differentiate their new device from their former (reasonably priced) units and launched the AK100. It was marketed a heck of a lot better than the DX100 and the HM801, looked better and was smaller to boot. Sadly it wasn't powerful enough to drive high impedance or ineffective headphones, lacked a proper lineout and needed to be modded by a third party for it to be usable with IEMs. Because of these things, I was never interested un it. These things also, to me, made it look wildly overpriced. I understand that it has a lot of fans and I'm okay with that, to each their own. But I must object to the claim that they in any way, shape or form lead the way. Except maybe when it came to marketing.

Exactly Sorensiim, if iRiver was confident enough in its brand name they would have launched it as the iRiver 120 and not the AK120. They fully knew that no one would pay that much for an iRiver and thus the marketing and such to promote it as a premium device. Reminds me of the earlier Lexus cars which were basically Toyota cars tarted up to be a Lexus.

Not to break up this dispute on who's better value for product received, but has anyone learned anything else new on the DX90. I'm really excited for this to launch. Hopefully and maybe they (Ibasso) will do a world tour like Fiio with the X5. I really have a hard decision to sell the DX50 for the 90 or keep them all and be greedy. I'm already selling things I don't need and saving every penny possible.

But it sounds so good. I'm going to sell my X3.

Yeah, sell your X3 - cos that'll help pay for the X5.

Now, what are you going to do about the DX90?

I was considering waiting as we'll but then saw that Amazon Japan was selling the hdp-r10 for 566.25 US shipped. Of course I will have to pay tenso however at that price I was sold and the wait over.

You guys are basically making my point for me. Thanks.

Never said they were first or best to make a HiEnd DAP. It was about how they have helped influence the market beyond headfier types and their top 2 models are just very good at whatever price. I think the 901 sounds great and I'm sure the DX100 does as well but they have other draw backs that make them not so consumer friendly beyond the extremists. That market is still theirs for now and that's what we're starting to see addressed by others. Not difficult to see unless there are loyalties involved.

My wife does not think there is any difference between her creative Zen and my DX50. She thinks this hobby is a total waste of money, maybe that is part of the reason I continue this great hobby.

So easy for them to say our hobby is total waste of money or burning hole in your pocket, never think of their new shoes, clothes, perfume, luxury bags also waste of money.
