As I see it, this new wave of high end DAPs was started by Hifiman (HM801) and Ibasso (DX100). They showed that there was indeed a market for expensive, no-compromise devices and Iriver, a waning company, decided to jump in. They created the Astell & Kern brand to differentiate their new device from their former (reasonably priced) units and launched the AK100. It was marketed a heck of a lot better than the DX100 and the HM801, looked better and was smaller to boot. Sadly it wasn't powerful enough to drive high impedance or ineffective headphones, lacked a proper lineout and needed to be modded by a third party for it to be usable with IEMs. Because of these things, I was never interested un it. These things also, to me, made it look wildly overpriced. I understand that it has a lot of fans and I'm okay with that, to each their own. But I must object to the claim that they in any way, shape or form lead the way. Except maybe when it came to marketing.
