If by that you mean that there are HT subs and music subs, that idea has been fairly well debunked by the subwoofer enthusiast community (although audiophiles who read audio trade magazines still buy into it). As for playing a larger area, it is a small compact sealed sub. Good for bedroom or small living room at moderately loud volumes. See Josh Ricci's review, starting with the listening test: http://www.audioholics.com/subwoofer-reviews/sb12-nsd-subwoofer/sb12-nsd-listening. Measurements follow on the next page.

I meant that one is a 12" driver rated 3db down at 20hz and the other an 8" driver with a passive radiator which is 10db down at 30hz. The REL I own is a woofer, a really good one but it doesn't play the same frequencies as a true subwoofer.

Looks like pads r not that great on this. HD558 and 598 has nice quality velour pads. 518 looks like it has some cheap velours

You may be right. The photos on Sennheiser's pages do make the pads look different, though lighting and photographing black fabric, converting the digital image and displaying on some random monitor is not completely reliable.

The pads on my HD555 are bigger and softer than the ones on my HD439, however the image of those looks worse than that of the HD518, though that may be beacause of the difference in size.

Seems that the HE-560 and the HE-400i's for $699 and $299 respectively at Moon Audio are the steals right now.

Ugh... I want to...I actually really really want to. It's one of few deals that still translates well into Canadian dollars, but means a new amp. Takes away the savings... Still not saying no though.
