it is not suitable for FiiO to decide which one is better in SQ. but you will get the answer soon from other people.

The more I see it the more I think this is the best looking fiio product so far

 silver and golden, and as you can see , the photo is took by my phone without any PS, and all head-fi'ers known how poor is my skill in photo. so, I think you can even expect it will looks more better when you get one.

So is it going to support all of the formats and sample rates that the X3 does, with the only exception being DSD?

yes, x1 can supports most music format as X3, except DSD and APE in insane, extra high and normal.

Sounds like the end of the iPod Classic is near... I hope.

Not really, you'll just end up with people ranting about how much better iTunes is at organizing everything for them and only peasants should be manually tagging and checking album art. Personally the end of the Classic has more potential with wireless storage for the Touch, and with compatible docks to keep them upright and dedicated iDevice DACs, these will be easier to use as a portable (with more compromises in hardware for SQ than the X1, obviously) as well as a music server at home.

Noone's hating on it. It's just that the Classics are bulky and rather old, and that includes it's hardware and implementation. If there's something that's smaller, and sounds better, obviously it's for the better.

They work great. Excellent UI, easy searching of large library in our system, they come with earphone in the box, they are popular... however, the SQ puts off a lot of us. I do not hate it personally since they have one of the smoothest system and I can always use an external DAC but it will definitely cost more than just getting a pair of FiiO X3 or possibly X5. 
 
It really depends on what you are looking for IMO
