So this weekend I breathed new life into my 6 year old iPod Video. Put a new battery, click wheel, and front and back casing on. (an HD upgrade may be on the horizon)

In any case, I've decided to RB it, but I've had issues installing the software. I'm a Mac user so I installed all of the Rockbox software/themes except for the bootloader. As per the Rockbox website, I downloaded the iPodPatcher and that's where the problem arises. Every time it scans, I get an error saying that I don't have permission to access the raw disk.

I double-checked and according to my MBP, I'm have root user rights and I'm the only one who has ever used/owned this iPod.

Any thoughts?

Your problem is a mac problem not a rockbox one, and I have no mac...

It's a bit of a long way round but you could download a bootable linux cd/dvd and run the linux version of the rockbox installer in that, if you have spare time/bandwidth and an intel based mac.  I've never tested it under a live cd as I use linux anyway but I've never hit a permission error on the linux version.  I'd suggest lubuntu 32bit as it's still available on a cd (so it's a smaller download) and you can install dependencies as easily as on a real install.

Good luck

Any Rockbox users wanna help a brother out?

You need ti run it via the terminal.

sudo ./Applications/xxx.app/MacOS/xxxx

Go inside the .app bundle.

the-fat-zmkl:~ xx$ cd /Applications/RockboxUtility.app/Contents/MacOS/
the-fat-zmkl:MacOS xx$ sudo ./RockboxUtility

Or in command line newbie friendly terms (hopefully not teaching granny to suck eggs Joe, you did ask for elaboration...)

open a terminal

copy/paste this into it (the colour change is meaningless) cd /Applications/RockboxUtility.app/Contents/MacOS/
press enter
This changes your current folder - now you are inside the rockbox bundle

copy/paste this into the terminal sudo ./RockboxUtility
press enter
This will run the app as root, and I'd hope it will ask for your password to do so...

Thanks to @Varoudis for the instructions

And one which forum formatting was unwilling to override!  I really should put OSX back on my netbook and gain at least a minimal working knowledge of it...

Well I ran the terminal just like you guys suggested and now I'm into a new error. After launching RB through the terminal when I try to install I get an error "Error reading partition table - possibly not an Ipod"

The iPod has been formatted as FAT32 and obviously the device can be seen by my Mac. Thoughts?
