I'm looking at buying a soundcard and headphones. I was thinking this combination.

Am I maximizing my soundcard with the current headphones? If I am not what should I buy in order to get my moneys worth from the sound card?

Should be good. Im a fan of beyers, others may throw out some alternate suggestions.

That combo should work fine though.

I would say to spend a little less on the sound card and a little more on the headphones.
I do think the Essence STX is a good sound card (I use one) and I own 7 Beyerdynamic headphones, so I like Beyers (but I know almost nothing about the DT660s).
You can get the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Z (SB1500, retail box) sound card for $99.
That would give you another $80 towards headphones ($220?)
Check out the AKG K612 Pro (120-Ohm) headphones ($160).

I'm stuck between the DT770 and the Sennheiser HD439. The Sennheiser HD439 does have a good price point though but what's your opinion (as well as anyone else who wants to comment)

If you like treble, go for the DT770 but if you like dark and roll off highs, you are better off for HD439

What do you mean by dark and roll off highs?

Dark means that the headphone emphasizes the lower frequencies, from bass to low midrange. It is the opposite of bright, which refers to emphasis in the treble.

Rolled off highs means that the very highest high frequencies are even less emphasized.
