Australian Tour & Impressions - Astrotec AX60 - Hybrid 3-way Universal IEM (2 x BA + Dynamic Driver)
Nov 27, 2013 at 10:06 AM Post #107 of 187
OK --- so what a week that was, some intense sessions with AX60, and to be honest with you all, it is, one of the best IEM that I have heard so far...

So, I'm going to write up in a different way, all 3 people who auditioned before me (audionewbi, H20Fidelity, and White Lotus) have written an excellent reviews, and rather than bore you guys to death with the same review, I'm going to approach this differently

Basically, I agree mostly with all the fantastic reviews before me, except maybe a couple of things which I'm going to detail a bit below.

WHAT DO I LIKE?
  • Bass - hands down, one of the best bass that I have ever experience, excellent textures, great impact, excellent speed (for dynamic), and awesome thickness. With stock silicone, as I mentioned earlier above, feels like sitting at the back of a Commodore SSS with fully sick subwoofers
  • Soundstage - Oh my goodness, need I say more? The way I heard it, feels like I am surrounded with speakers, it is absolutely immense and satisfying, I thought Dunu1k is huge, this is absolutely humongous. Listening to Lorde's album Pure Heroine with this will bring you such an enjoyable experience

WHAT DON'T I LIKE?
  • Fit - Well, I have a massive ear, and big and deep canal, so first up, the stock silicone are all too small for me, and the body itself is shape rather oddly for my ear, I had difficulties in getting a proper fit and seal. I can't get a proper shallow fit with this (which apparently is the best way it should be used), using my trusty large Comply Ts affected the sound so much that it became not very good. At the end, I settled with large MEE single flange
  • Cable - I don't know, not really a big fan of the cable, yes it is built like a tank and can withstand a lot of knockaround, but for some reason, to me, the cable feels a little bit awkward, IMHO it's a little stiff and not very 'flexible' (as a comparison, I absolutely LOVE Dunu1k's cable, and IMHO all IEM cable should be made like this)

SOME ADDITIONAL POINTS
  1. This sounds best with large bore silicone tips, and shallow fit. If you try deeper fit, you will find that the bass will sound like it is 'restrained', if you know what I mean...(feels like if you have to dance or exercise in a 1m x 1m room...)
  2. With stock silicone I hear some treble spikes and sibilance here and there on some tunes, perhaps I am a little sensitive to it? I don't know, maybe it's only me, but I did hear those...
  3. With the mid/bass filter, it sounds a little on the muddy side, and on the other side of the coin, sounds immaculate with the treble filter...

COMPARISON TO OTHER HYBRIDS
  1. vs H100 - no comparison here, AX60 sounds miles, and miles better, though bear in mind that H100 is dual hybrid as opposed to triple hybrid
  2. vs H200 - AX60 wins, not hands down, but I would spend $150 more to buy AX60 given the choice...H200's mid spike is rather annoying to me
  3. vs Dunu1k - to me, both of them are almost equal, with the scale tips on AX60 favour ever so slightly, I prefer Dunu's treble, cable, timbre, and bass (yes although AX60's bass is one of the best, but quantity and impact wise I prefer Dunu's), and AX60 wins on soundstage, detail, and fun factor.

WOULD I BUY?

In short, had I not spend my money on Rooth LSX5 before I auditioned AX60, yes, absolutely, I will buy in a heartbeat...

Ok, just received them! :D
Only listened to them for about an hour so far.

First impressions:
Wow! The bass! My ears were drawn straight to it. Bass-lovers (particularly sub-bass) will find what they are looking for here. It has that cavernous quality which will definitely attract a lot of people. You can really feel it pulsating which is a nice sensation that I often miss from tighter, higher end headphones - it's nice to hear it again!
Even though the notes aren't completely tight (they do linger a bit), it's extremely well done! It's a very nice natural decay
Soundstage is extremely nice :)
Everything seems relatively balanced, female vocals and sub-bass/mid-bass are a touch forward, really nicely done (not overblown) emphasis
Not hearing the treble spike, little sibilance heard. Not really annoying at all, only the most fussy will be annoyed. :p
Fit is comfortable, not too finicky. Stock silicones fit nicely, haven't tried foams yet.
Build quality and aesthetics are gorgeous, really well-machined stuff - impressed!
Seriously, I'm just having a rocking good time with these IEM's, just enjoying my music and forgetting all about the nitpicky stuff

Do add an amp, that will help tightening the notes

ZOMG!!!

It's been such an effort and pretty disrespectful of people to let it get to this, but as we're also new to doing impression tours in Australia, etc, we'll have a better understanding and screening of who gets on the tour.  It's a shame, as they'll ruin it for other Australian head-Fiers.

Sorry guys for those who have had to wait that extra time.

Oh, and Happy New Year guys! :)

Lucky H20 was there to pull it all back together.

Gotta watch these Australian tour members, give 'em an inch or turn your back for one second, they'll stomp all over ya!.
