I'm willing to pay for good quality connectors and proper shielding, but I don't believe in cables making a difference beyond that.

What's a good brand, easily available in the US? I nearly bought the RCA brand with gold connectors from Home Depot for $14, but they were only in 6 foot lengths, I'd rather get a 2 or 3 foot set and not have extra wire all over the place. I need a standard RCA IC and a couple of good mini to RCAs.

Try Bestbuy. They had few cables around 10-20 bucks (Acoustic research brand) that had gold plating, thick blue jacket and acceptable shielding.

Yeah, they look nice too. Some are 3 feet. I've thought about buying those just for the aesthetics and confidence of a well-made cable for my best analog paths. Just can't quite get myself to do it though. It's against my religion, so to speak. I might just though.

I've had trouble with connectors not making consistantly good contact, especially with 1/8 inch plugs, and I can hear distortion in a couple of old, thin plastic cables, so I think I'm finally ready to take the next "step up" in quality.

Also, the cat seems less interested in chewing on thick cables than the thin ones.

Yes, but I doubt he would be ~$15, being that he is in the UK

Well, I wasn't really referring to him, but he's one example. There are a lot of people here who make their own cables for personal use & some of them could be comissioned to make some ICs with your specs.

Handy? Well, um, er... I do own a soldering iron. And I seem to remember using it to repair some loose connection on a portable radio years ago. But that was a while back, I'm not sure if it's worthwhile for me to try getting in to that sort of thing. When I needed a headphone extension cable a few months ago, I found that the parts weren't that much less expensive than ordering a finished cable from markertec

A really nice cheap DIY cable would be Canare Starquad LE46S with Neutrik Pro-Fi RCA plugs. The Canare cable is 36 cents per foot and the Neutrik Pro-Fi RCA plugs are $10.99 per pair from Markertek. It's a few bucks more than you were looking to spend but these connectors are top quality and the Canare cable doesn't sound bad at all. I need to make a few RCA cables for myself so if you want I can make you a set of cables for you at just the price of parts. A 3 ft pair would be $24.14 plus a few bucks for shipping. PM me if you want a set.

Acoustic Research at Best Buy ,I believe they are 29.95 a meter pair a little higher then you planned on spending but good bang for the buck.
