Audeze LCD-X
Jul 7, 2014 at 9:20 PM Post #4,531 of 12,748
A follow up on the topic of the LCD-X having an emphasis on the upper mids and lower treble region. I did some more testing with different systems and different headphones - and found the same thing - recessed bass and mids, prominent upper mids / lower treble.

The problem is with my hearing - not the equipment.

Took me awhile to realise that my newbie enthusiasm for the wonderful sound of a high end headfi led me to crank the gain knob a little too far, a little too often. I'm sure it's temporary, but I am desensitised at the moment to all bass to mid range sounds. From conversations to listening to my car radio - the bass and mids are noticably recessed.

So be careful out there.

Normally it's the most sensitive part of the hearing that gets damaged with excessive exposure. I would expect the opposite, that if you damaged your hearing you would be hearing recessed treble and relatively emphasized bass and lower mids. Strange. But I'm not an ear doctor, so there might be more to this.

My hearing was pre-damaged, courtesy of the Royal Australian Artillery, and an ear infection as a youngster.

I am hearing treble and plenty of it - while the bass and mids are recessed.

I'm sure it will pass in a few days.

Quality headfi gear is so very clear that it is tempting to turn the volume up and up - nothing distorts, you just get more of the good stuff. A little too much, in my case.

Wow good to get a little wake up call about this. I do tend to crank it up sometimes a little too much. Especially when rockin' heavy...

I was surprised ! To say the least ! I have never heard of non-fazor LCD3 s dying in this way, Have heard a couple of reports of fazor LCD3s dying,
But none so far of LCD-X
.I expect Audeze products to be totally reliable, to mature and take on a refined character, like fine wine, not bomb-out after three months!!

I was listening to Love by the Beatles at the time, at normal, medium volume ( Green) on a Chord Hugo . I listen to a wide range of genres, Classical, Blues, Jazz, Folk, World Fusion. It was just starting to burn- in nicely too, very disappointing.!!!!

Thanks, yeah bit of a bummer, let's hope they sort it quick. I live in England, so I'm hoping I 'm just getting a swapped - out replacement! If I find out the cause, I'll let everybody know! Good listening!

Very unusual for a speaker of any type to work fine for three months and just puff one day. You would think it had to be a surge or some type of a power issue. Best of luck on the repair and please let us know if you find out what caused it.

Yes I admit I was surprised I just thought they would chug-on forever like my friend's LCD 3s! Thanks for your support and I'll certainly get back to everyone, if and when I find out the cause! Cheers R

Thanks for the info, I had no idea it could work that way.

Different topic - comfort. I can't remember who it was that suggested using a seat belt pad on the LCD-X headband - but THANK YOU to whoever that kind soul was. Excellent idea.

I was getting a pressure point right on the top of my bald pointy head - rather unpleasant after about 30 mins. A seat belt pad, cut to the right length, fixed that. Also made the LCD-X a much firmer fit on my skull so I can move my head around a lot more without feeling like my headphones are going to fall into my lap. Also helps a little in distributing the weight more evenly over my noggin.

I am using these, cut to suit with a sharp pair of scissors. I'll be getting another for my HE6, which is also a little lacking in the comfort and fit departments for my shiny skull.

Thanks for the feedback, for I hope to get the lcd-x sometime early next year. I shave my head and feel it would suffer from how the lcd-x bothered you head. Please have a good night.
P.s Have you tried any frank zappa on your remarkable x's. Zappa sounds Devine on me Alpha Dogs.
