I have the NFB-5.2 and am wondering if anyone can answer this question in relation to that model or similar ones.

The NFB-5.2 has a jumper switch for fixed / variable output level from the DAC. What I'm wondering is if setting the jumper for fixed output has any impact on SQ. Does it bypass the volume pot (which is a high quality Alps pot so not a weak link as such)?

Can anyone clarify for me?

It simply goes like this. If you are using your NFB-5.2 as DAC and you are connecting it to Integrated Amplifier, you should use fixed level output to get the best sound from DAC and use volume level regulation from integrated amp. In that case you should use jumper. Hovever if you are using The Power Amp, not Integrated one, you should use 5.2 as preamp, hence for you should use variable level output, in that case no jumper. Indeed jumper bypass volume regulation for DAC/Preamp mode.
