Sennheiser 280 pro VS Shure E3c for a drummer

well, this has got me thinking.

What is the cheapest mixer/moniter I could get?

The purpose would be to run a few mics into it along with my ipod. then run the Shures out of that.

I've played drums along to music wearing the 580's, and also with protection muffs over bog standard walkman earphones. No problem with outside noise.

See, they work, problem is, i dont feel they block out QUITE enough. I feel i need to turn it up louder than i should be. And this worries me more lately because over the past 2 years ive noticed some deterioration in my hearing.

Just solved my own problem.

I decided I don't want canalphones b/c they're too expensive for me, and they'll probably over-isolate for my Hot Rod quiet drumming. I'm a diehard fan of all things Audio Technica...I just love the way their headphones sound. I had the A500s, adored them, and upgraded to the W1000s and use them daily to sink away to heaven on earth but I'm not about to risk drumming with a set of $450 cans on my head.

So I did some digging and came across these guys: the Audio-Technica ATH-D40fs headphones. They list for $150, and can be found at several places for about $85, however Musician's Friend has them for $59 on sale, and ZZounds.com is a great place that pricematches MF without a hitch to save a few bucks, so for about $57 I'll score a set of these. These aren't audiophile cans, and are really made for mixing/monitoring, which is what I need on the kit. Plus the cord comes in just on the left lessening clutter. It's only for a 1/4" end, but I've got a 1/4"-to-1/8" adapter to hook into the iPod anyway...these seem to isolate very well, but not ALL sound, which is just what I was looking for...and the key here is that these are the cousins to the ATH-M40fs, and the big difference is these are "bass-enhanced" to really show the low-end...PERFECT!

And they're not huge so I can wear them around outside if need be...I trust the A-T sound enough to order these & will report on them in about a week or so. If you wanna PM Musician's Friend through zzounds.com, the MF link is right here
