Hi all!

I'm quite new to the headphones, and just started a month ago when I got a pair of Sennheiser PXC250-ii for a good price, and started noticing how crappy my desktop speakers sounded.

Hence I've been meaning to get another pair for my desktop, and so far I have quite liked the PXC250-ii in how it sounds. And as the title suggested, I'm now stuck deciding between the HD598 and the DT880, both of which I will be able get for about the same price.

I would say listening to music and playing games is about a 50/50 split for me, and the music I listen to tend to be classical/vocal, with the occasional pop/country songs.

So between the two, which one would you guys recommend for my usage case?

note: I will be driving those with an ASUS Essence STX, which from what I hear have a quite decent amp. Also, the PXC250-ii's bass is quite plenty for my taste, if that can be used as a reference for you guys.

What prices can you get for the HD598 & DT880 Premium 600-Ohm?
I would say to go for the DT880 Premium 600-Ohm, should provide a little more bass and a little more warmth.
Have you tried using Foobar2000 for playing audio files?

Don't know your system or sound card.  However get the DT 880 600 Ohm if it will drive them.  If not get the DT 880 250 Ohm if it will drive them.  See:

Indeed I owned the Beyer Dt 880 Pro 250 and it was one of my favorites! After I got a Full Sized Desktop Solid state I bought the 600 ohm,  so I'd start with the Pro 2550 ohm one! It is also PRETTY cheap to buy!

Thanks for all the replies!

It seems like a pretty unanimous that the DT880 will be better, so I guess I'll go with that one.

@KG Jag: I'll driving those with the ASUS Xonar Essence STX, which at leasst claims to be able to drive up to 600Ohm headphones.

@PurpleAngel: No I haven't really tried Foobar...although I did try a few FLAC tracks, if that's what you mean. Also, I can get the 598 for 230 CAD and DT880 for 250 CAD.

Currently listening to Annie Lennox with Foobar2000, sending digital audio thru the Essence STX sound card, out thru the STX's headphone jack into the DT880 Premium 600-Ohm headphones.
Volume setting on the computer is only at 45%
