Hello all.  As my long title says, I am looking for more information about using an Emotiva mini-x a-100 to power some orthodynamic headphones that are rated at 50 ohms.  I've done a bit of research on the subject, so I know it's not something people don't do.  However my question is concerning the 50 ohms load.  Would it be necessary to use resistors to present a 8 ohm load to the amplifier, or is it ok to leave those out seeing its only a 50 ohm impedence headphone?

I'm really looking for people with experience, and have actually done this.  I would like to be certain if I do not use resistors, I'm not going to wind up with a pair of ruined cans, or a blown amplifier.

Thank you in advance for any and all info and pointers.

Sounds like you are using a HE-6 to be paired with a Mini-x. Here are some threads to read:

http://www.head-fi.org/t/629352/he-500-lcd2-d5000-dt770-sr80-on-a-speaker-amp-emotiva-mini-x-a-100-project - they use several cans with these (HE-500 in particular). Resistors I believe weren't required for proper volume control. Impedance of the HE-500 is roughly 38ohm. So the amp will see (taking the rating of 80W at 4 ohms for the mini-x) --> 80 x 4 / 38 = 8.42 W at a 38 ohm load. You should be fine with that load for those cans.

Here is a thread for the HE-6 with speaker amps: http://www.head-fi.org/t/649107/speaker-amps-for-headphones. I think resistors have been used to lower noise floor(?) with the emotiva and other speaker amps.

Other reads: http://www.head-fi.org/t/529873/amps-that-can-drive-the-hifiman-he-6-planar-headphones (search for emotiva and find the guys who have owned the Emotiva mini-x for their input)

You will have more luck on those threads than starting a new one for an already discussed subject....Good Luck.

I believe there are a few who are using the Alphas and the Mad Dogs with the emotiva. IIRC you can contact preproman or just check out the Alpha dogs and Mad dogs thread if you haven't already.
