actually, I like these cans
hey, these cans are actually pretty good!

Just about everyone seems to have reacted the same way.
My first listen to the 250-80s was done next to the 831s, and straight away my impression was "these do not sound as good as the 831s" months later, guess which ones I listen to more?

They are revealing, just not in an "in your face(ear?)" kind of way. You can hear lots of detail if you want, but if you'd rather just sit back and enjoy the music you can - the 831s don't let me do that, I find myself hearing every flaw whether I like it or not.

Xander: do this test - Put a good Pink Floyd album on (any will do), sit back and -don't- listen to the headphones

Just see how you feel instead of trying to hear the headphones.

Exactly.. When I first put them on it was with an analyzing how do they sound attitude... It was ugly, especially on the Sansui. It got better with sources, but once I decided they sucked, I didnt want to listen any more.. Then later on, completely uninterested in hearing them, I put them on and I was like hey wait.. These sound good.

Yep. Exactly how I found them. Especially the mids. At first they dont seem like it, but you soon learn that theyre very revealing and transparent.

I'm already ahead of you. One of the first things I did. I have to admit, the extra bass does add a bit of a "fun" factor into the drum hits, etc. It's cool because I hate over emphasized sloppy bass, but this sortof feels like it belongs, even though I know it's a little on the bloated side.

A number of questions to you all, hope you'll bear with me...

1: Exactly in what (and how big) is the difference in sound for DT250-80 with and without an amplifier?

2: Does DT250-80 unamplified sound worse than the V6/7506 unamplified?

3: Which not-too-expensive portable amplifier do you recommend with DT250-80?

4: And, has anyone here experience with the 250 Ohm model, DT250-250 (I think I've read earlier that someone bought it)? How much better is it over the DT250-80 (if at all)?

Alright, I'll resay that!

While many say that the 831's are too analytical to just enjoy the music, I find this to not be the case. At night, I can listen to Pink Floyd with my DT831's, powered through my Total Airhead with the processor on (thereby reducing the highs), and I can happily zone out. However, I find that listening to my HD565's through my Total Airhead without the processor on is better for this purpose. Okay?

Xander,

I'm glad that you gave the 250-80s a chance. Each can has its own unique sonic character. You just happened to be used to the AKGs sound and now you're getting acclimated to the 250-80s sound. I agree with you the highs are rolled off, leading to a darker sound. Not a bad thing (IMHO), just different. An amp does wonders for the 250-80s especially the MG Head. You made a great choice.

Regards - reynman

I sold them to Xander. And I'm sure they're ok. Since I have an extra set of 250-80's to compare with.

1. Everything gets better of course.

2. The Beyer is better IMO. More neutral sounding, less fatiguing sound. You can listen to these for a long time without becoming tired. The V6's I have to take off after an hour or so.

3. No idea. Most amps will work fine.

4. I've got both. The dt250-250 is better at everything. But, you have to have an amp with the dt250-250, the amps in portables cannot handle the dt250-250. they clip and also loose control of the bass.
