Who is adding an amplifier on top of a Chord Hugo to listen to IEM's like the Shure SE846? I never heard of anyone doing that. Even the JH Layla is driven by an iPhone so adding an amplifier is really overkill and not needed.

For the Sennheiser HD800, that's what I'm doing but with high end solid state amplifiers like the Taurus MK2 or the GS-X MK2 which don't add any colour.
Hi ubs28, i also try that but still find bass lacking so i try black filter but the treble is lacking before i change to headphone but later i thought of trying modded black today and bingo, i like it but will try for few days.[/quote
I for one have used Hugo, and Vorzuge amp in combination... The Hugo can be a little, dry sounding, to me, and heck, if it is a crime against humanity for me to triple stack, shackle me up now...

Looking for a little input from y'all on this SE846 thread. Looking to pick up a pair of these phones. I know they are well-regarded in so many ways by most listeners, buyers, and critics. Would their sound be described as "lively"? I have been exposed to some higher-end IEM's that are so laid-back and well-rounded, they are, dare I say, kinda boring. I keep looking for that one song, artist, recording that is gonna take an IEM over the top. I just feel like I am looking for something punchy, lively,MAND exciting, without artificial. Am I asking too much!?!?
SE846 with white filters is the liveliest incarnation, and sounds closest to neutral. Unless of course you consider going filterless which basically puts the treble into overdrive but drastically reduces the bass amount. I might be mistaken, but most people buy the SE846 for the "true woofer" sound and if you deviate too much from that I think it defeats the purpose of getting the 846 in the first place.
For a truly lively, aggressive sound, consider the JH13. I use that for rock and they've never failed me. The 846 OTOH I listen at night when I want a warm, deep and satisfying bass enveloping my ears.
Before I get the hugo, i also use white filter before but some songs that has bad recording makes the treble piercing at times so i switch to blue filter which is good but treble is not ideal to me so i modded the blue filter and it is the best combo. I had tried black filter but the treble is not what i want while the bass is too much. Now, after getting the hugo, it upset the whole system. The treble is too much for me. After changing filter and modded filter, i settle with modded black filter. Now, i am still trying out. I do not know if i should go for headphone for my portable setup as my initial purpose for hugo is for my hifi system but since it can be portable so i add into my portable system. I like iem as it is easy to carry but now i find the 3d effect from se846 is no longer what it is before i add hugo. One way is to take out the hugo from my portable setup or upgrade to headphone but it is not so portable then.

Why don't you try the regular (unmodded) blue filter? The Shure SE846 with the regular blue filters (no mods) is even brighter than the Sennheiser HD800 (using the Chord Hugo only), so why mod the blue filters if the treble is too much?

Try it, you might just like it, the world isn't one size fits all, and let us face facts, if the iPhone is all that is needed, then why bother with the Hugo in the first place...
And, let us not forget that these Vorzuge amps are not what you would find in a dollar store, they're TOTL... Oh, and seeing that we are in the SE846 thread, let us not forget the hiss generated by the Hugo...
Sometimes it isn't about how much power is needed, it is about how it is delivered...
You're the first and only person I have ever heard or seen who does that. For full sized headphones like the HD800, I can understand. But for IEM's?
Considering that iPhones handle IEM's fine, I think it's totally unnecessary and it acts as a colourfier rather than an amplifier.
There was a guy in one thread who was using a Yggdrasil and Ragnarok, plus a £400 cable. His headphones? Some Custom Art CIEMs. Nothing else. I believe the same guy was also using the HUGO with a Portaphile 627.
