KEF M500/M200 Impressions Thread
Mar 28, 2014 at 1:18 AM Post #856 of 1,358
I just got the m500 and wow the sound is great unamped! Now I'm thinking about getting the m200, has anyone tried the triple fi 10s and compared the m200? If someone can lead me into the right direction of which is better that would be great. I live in canada so the triple fi 10 goes for $300 CDN.

I'm interested in getting either these or the Sennheiser Momentums. Can someone please lay out the advantages of the KEF's over the Momentums? Thanks.

I'll assume that you're referring to the original, "over-ear" Momentums. I'm sure someone else will come along and give you a more detailed comparison - and / or perhaps completely disagree with my take - but the two big distinctions are that (1) the Momentums have a fair amount of mid-bass (and unless it's countered with some careful EQ'ing, it really takes away from the upper mids) and (2) the Momentums only fit small ears.  Alright, well I guess those are the disadvantages of the Momentums as opposed to the advantages of the M500s, but you get the picture...the M500s definitely have some solid sub-bass kick but they generally aren't as warm as the Momentums, and for on-ear phones, they're extremely comfortable.

Yer welcome! Still meaning to get back to you about how they change the sound on the h200's versus the mh1c tips...

I'd like to know how they change the sound on the M200 versus the stock tips

Ok, I'll have to do some listening. Fyi, I never really was able to use the stock tips because I couldn't get a good seal with them, so my thoughts on the stock tips may not be too useful. I ended up using the comply tx500 and tsx500 tips on the m200's which sound awesome (possibly the best), but they are more fiddly to get in and I'm an impatient guy lol. So then on the hit list were the ue900 tips which I do get a good seal with, and which also sound fantastic on the M200's. I would have been happy indefinitely with the UE900 tips, but then I got smitten with the vmoda tips. I haven't sat down and done a proper comparison of them all which would be a good thing for me to do. So hopefully I can find the time later.

You know, I'm a bit jealous that I ended up selling my M500 to Wayne when it first was getting all its hype.

Now that I got one, again, and am able to actually enjoy them for an extended period... the thread is either slow... or you guys only talk about the M200!

*tears*

I think I should have my Momentums for sale in the near future… if interested.

I don't know if my head/ears are that strange (or just too small?) but I can't achieve a good seal with almost any over-ear headphones. I'm resigned to on-ears!

Yes, I have been enjoying your my M500 goodness ever since you made your big mistake lol! I'm glad that you were able to come to you senses though!

The reason the thread is slow is because there is too much new stuff coming out all of the time. The M500's suddenly got a lot of competition in the $300 price range (HP50's, P7's ON1's etc). They hold up very well imo, but people at head-fi tend to like to move on and try new stuff (wow, really?). It really comes down to personal preference though. As much as I love my other gear, I keep coming back to the M500's and thinking how awesome they are.

If you do let go of them, please PM me.

Thanks.

I'm actually glad you ended up that happy. It justified the fact that I had to sell them, unexpectedly, and ended up the perfect hands (or should I say on the perfect ears

).

You know, however, I may have jinxed myself after making that post last night. I really hate this. Just like the last time I had the M500... something unfortunate happens... and I'm probably going to have to sell it, again, to make up for the financial loss. Sucks because I got these for a great deal that I know I won't come across, again.

Life... it really does throw some curve balls at ya, doesn't it? Smh..

Anybody else use comply tx500 (or tsx500) tips with the m200's? Dannybai got me hooked on the combo. Just a wonderfully balanced, full sounding, beautiful signature.

I ended up getting a triple pack of Comply TX-500 foam tips, which are much more comfortable than the ones that come with the headphones, and do also give better seal and thus sound quality.

Just got these a few days ago.  They sound amazing even with the stock medium tips.  A question for those using the comply's were you not able to get a seal with the provided tips?  Or did you just find that the comply's sounded better than the provided tips (provided you got a good seal with both)?

Trying to decide if I should pick up some complys.

Couldn't get a good seal with the stock tips, and they were really uncomfortable. In fairness, I didn't try the other sizes, but I've always used medium ones.

Complys are ridiculously overpriced for six pieces of foam inserts, but for me definitely worth it since I wouldn't have used the headphones much without them. YMMV.

Thanks for the reply.  Yeah the comply's price is making me hesitate... I also generally like silicone more than foam tips.

Might still give them a try still.  Although I can't really see how these could sound any better heh
