I don't know a thing about this stuff...

Never heard them myself, but the general consensus is nope. Most people refer to the Sony V-series cans as "v-crap" here.

I had the V200s. Worse phones I've ever heard.

For $69ish (sometimes less), the Grado SR60s and Sony V6s (not V600s) are very good for the price.

EDIT: And welcome to Head-Fi.

lordy lord, no, a complete waste of money. i have tried those low end sony before, they have bloated bass and overall muddy sound. we dont have enough info about you and your needs to be able to recommend a specific headphone yet, but there are many choices. you can get something like the sennheiser hd497 for home use, or the sennheiser px200 for portable use.

or an audio technica ath-m30, a $50 fullsize headphone, with soft and comfortable earpads, not much low bass, nice punchy upper bass, decent midranges, though not as clear as the v6 but more present, and highs are a little colors but smooth sweet overall. good for any type of music at that price range. it take about 100hours of use before the low bass show up and the sharp treble to smooth out. sweet headphone and is a real sony v6 contender without any of the fatigueness.

For around $69, I say go with SR60s. If you don't need isolation, you'll be hard pressed to find something that sounds better at that price.

The Sennheiser HD-497 is a very good sounding headphone in your price range. I like it better than the Grado and much better than the Sony V6.

Yes, basically. There is technically a difference between noise cancelation and attenuation, but it's not that important in this debate. Basically, the Grado has none at all. Outside noises sound almost the same with them on as with them off.

The virtual opposite of that is leakage, which is what others can hear coming from your phones. The SR60s do that too. It's too bad, but it's a worthy sacrifice for the sound. Although with E3s coming in a couple weeks....

ok, here are the ones I am still considering...I've looked over the ones you guys recommended. I ruled out the PX1/200s because I want the ear muff and the SR60s because I'm going to college, where I'll have a room mate and I'll need to at least keep the volume down a little:

Please try and pick from those 3 unless you have a pair that is VASTLY superior for NO MORE than $70.

Thanks again for all the help, hopefully the order will go in tomorrow sometime if I get enough reponses tonight.

Out of the ones you've listed:

No to the Sennheiser HD497s because they're open (you'll hear all of everybody else's campus shenanigans)

No to the Koss - dinosaur design (heavy and uncomfortable)

Yes to the AudioTechnica

Just my 2 cents
