Comparisons: 36 of the Top Closed/Portable Headphones Around

Guess I'll find out for myself soon enough how they sound. That's in the end the only way to truly find out. Will post my impressions once I have them.

Have to say though, this search for a comfortable, good sounding and somewhat portable closed can is getting a bit frustrating.

They were also a little bright, with some sibilance present.

This sounds strange to me. I've used mine with an iPhone 4S, HDVD 800, Xonar Essence One headphone out and more recently a O2 amp. What I listen to most of the time isn't particularly well mixed music, so Beyerdynamic headphones like the DT 880, 990 and T1 are unusable for me because of their piercing treble in the sibilant frequencies. I haven't heard anything like that with my P7, so now I'm curious if they might be a bad mix with the source/amp you were using, or if there's some variation in the treble between models, or if you just listen to even worse mixed music than I do. To me the P7 have some treble sparkle for sure, but no sibilance or harshness at all, even with tracks I know made my ears bleed with the Beyerdynamic headphones.

Hahaha, glad I could entertain you. Once I've found the perfect headphone (for me) I'll stop entertaining you though :)

Well I would not call the P7s excessively bright or piercing, but they definitely sound brighter than the KEF M500 I own and compared directly too. I heard a slight emphasis on the sibilants of a couple of female vocal recordings I tried (great recordings, nothing bright), but not to the point that it was piercing.

I used my iPhone 5 as a source, and it's a great mobile source so can't be an issue there.

I'm actually surprised I found them to sound the way they did, I was sure B&W would make another thick and "yummy"-sounding headphone but these ones just lacked richness to my ears. I made sure I had a sealed, comfortable fit, which is not hard for an over-ear but still. And I took them off and on several times and nothing changed. Could of course be a faulty unit, but I doubt it as it was a demo they had in the store.

I just retried the momentum and my second impression: not very good. The main problems are its soundstage and instrument separation. It doesnt really even compare to the KEF M500, or the Sony MDR 7506 imo. The esw9a is a little bit better too.

P7 have greater extension and which is assisted by the largest soundstage of the three. But do not consider them 'brighter' than M500. My description of P7 trying to be big headphone sound in a portable headphone frame is really how I would put it

As I say in terms of tonality switching from P7 to M500, it is the M500 vocals not being quite right anymore.

Putting aside individual ears and perception of what is "bright", really the overall picture is that the P7 is still a bigger sound for me. I don't see how anyone can call the sound thin either. Compared to what, the old generation Shure with their milky mids? The category existed before Beats, but Beats made full sized portables popular. The P7 is expensive but B&W fixed the previous flaws and yeah they are causing a problem because with their distribution network people are getting the opportunity to hear what the pricetag is bringing

I guess it's a case of the music you used working better with the M500. I've had both for a while now and there's some albums which definitely work best with the M500, but overall I've found myself enjoying the P7 more. Depends entirely on the music.

Just tried the P7s, not impressed. The M500 is far better, and while I didn't have the momentum with me to compare, I'm pretty sure they are better as well.

They certainly don't sound at all like the P5, and they are much cleaner. But they just sounded thin to me, no body to vocals and instruments. They were also a little bright, with some sibilance present. Not a realistic sound at all.

Honestly, I'd listen to the P7s again. A short trial at a store is never ideal. THey certainly do no lack body. In fact, I find them more natural sounding to even the M500s. The instrumental separation and soundstaging is a VERY good step up from either the Momentums or M500s. Very realistic sounding; especially with classical music. I feel as if I'm in a concert hall....the M500s make me feel as if I'm in a much smaller venue in comparison (though the M500s are still better than most). Again, I still love the M500s, but the P7s are rocketing up the charts in my book...simply outstanding headphones IMO. YMMV of course.

Strange... must have been something wrong with that P7 then.

So everyone take my statement with a grain of salt for now and I'll try to audition them again at another place

I'd suggest more than an audition at a store. I've never found thar a good a good methodology for auditioning gear (unless of course it was absolutely horrible). See if you can get one on an extended listen...you might be surprised. :xf_eek:

A sit down at a hi-fi store with a dozen of songs to go between is more than enough to get a general idea of how the headphone sounds for me. Not enough to go into detail, but sufficient for me to call the impression I got valid. No chance for an extended listen either, I'm afraid..
