Comparisons: 36 of the Top Closed/Portable Headphones Around
Jul 3, 2014 at 8:52 PM Post #2,266 of 4,373
Just curious, why is the Sennheiser momentum ranked 7 in sound when its aggregate sound scores are lower than the majority of the headphones?

A few things..the carrying case is freakin' huge (so you really pay a price for portability...I can barely get it to fit in the holder in the seat in front of me on a plane) and the treble roll off is too dramatic for me. Listening to Chris Botti puts him behind the bassist...not a realistic sound stage. When they were released a few years back, they certainly broke new ground, but some newer headphones have moved things forward IMO.

Oh haha I meant the other way around.  For example the Mikros is ranked 13 soundwise, but it has a higher combined sound score than the Momentum.  Just wondering if there were other factors in play.  Thanks for putting all the information up though :)

They are uber portable and sound really good (especially for the $100 they're selling for).

Ah I'm just confused why the mikros is ranked lower than the momentum in sound when it scores better in the noise isolation, bass, mid, treble, and image categories.  Thinking of picking up a pair.

Because as good as they sound, the clamping really limits them to about 20 minute sessions. If they were more comfortable, then they'd definitely be higher!

The clamping force was also a problem for me...but then I stretched the headband and comfort improved dramatically.  I can now use them at work, for 5 or 6 hours straight, without experiencing any discomfort.   Mileage will vary, though...

Exactly right. After applying the following headband stretching exercises, I also can enjoy my 90's for hours :)

Thinking headband stress would not be the only stress relieved

Now that's what I call a headphone rack.

I've tried stretching them, but to little avail with my noggin.

FWIW, I've recently heard a new pair (black version) of the Beats Executive and to my surprise the dreaded "hissssss" is mostly gone. Very similar to the quite acceptable Beats Studio 2013 version. Nice to see that Beats fixed this very glaring issue. So with that in mind, I've gone back and adjusted my scores and added some comments for that headphone. Gotta say, in terms of styling and construction, these are pushing for the top of the listing. Sound wise, not so much, but like the Studio 2013 versions, a good step in the right direction.

Thanks for this list. I have been trying to find some comparisons between the HP50 and M500 and this is one of the few comparisons. Sounds like the HP50 are preferred.

Do you have any images of how the HP50 fold into their case?

Thanks! I definitely do prefer the HP50s to the M500s. Better comfort, sound, isolation certainly helps.

Sorry I no longer own the HP50s though, but basically the earcups fold down flat and they go straight into their case that way. If anyone owns a pair, maybe they could snap a photo?

If only I have the original case, but then again, when they fold flat and put into a case, they are pretty portable but not pocket sized thought :)

Hope it helps!
Billson :)
