Hey everyone! It's my first post here and I need help with choosing my first decent headphones. I've been using a pair of cheap Philips headphones with a mic, so my standards are pretty low right now and anything is going to be an upgrade.

I usually listen to EDM, i.e Trance, Progressive, Electro House and hip-hop from time to time so emphasis on bass is important. I don't want something way too bassy tho, don't get me wrong, I'm one of those people for which bass is never enough, but I don't want all the other sounds destroyed while having tons of bass. I know I won't get a lot of everything for this price, so anything with decent bass response and average highs and mids is good. They also need to be over-the-ear and closed.

At first I was convinced I wanted XB500s, but since they are discontinued, it was literally impossible to find them in any shop in my country (Bulgaria) and ordering them from a foreign website which still has them would make them a bit too expensive for what they are worth.

I looked in a couple of threads on the Head-Fi forums with a similar title, but most of the models suggested that were under $100 are now $150+ on amazon and even more expensive in other websites and in my case there's almost no way I'll find a second hand, refurbished or some kind of a bargain, so I'm looking for something which is $100 MSRP or less.

I hope I was descriptive enough, I've been looking at headphones for the past 2 days and I've read reviews on some pairs that claim to have "Great, punchy bass", while others saying "Very weak and innacurate" for the same model, and it's been quite confusing.

Thanks!

Ok, well, I was in a similar boat as you but, I wasn't looking for an emphasis on bass in my headphones (just turned out that I ended up with several pairs that fit that description, all priced at less than $100, respectively).

Monoprice 8323 @ less than $30

Panasonic RP-HTF600-S @ just over $30

Superlux HD 681 @ just over $30

JVC HARX900 @ just under $60

Creative Aurvana Live! @ $60

Audio-Technica ATH-WS55 @ $70

Shure SRH440 @ just under $90

Sennheiser HD 439 @ $100

There are many more choices out there. Check out the reviews and the forums here on head-fi, and see what else is out there for you.

Good luck!

Are you certain on ear wouldn't work? The JVC HA-S500 have good solid bass response with some emphasis, but not overwhelming. Smooth mids and highs. They really are an excellent headphone for under $100. People are getting them off ebay direct from Japan, so good chance you can get them for a decent price, too. Currently they are going for about $55 shipped to the US.

Thanks guys. I'm specifically looking for around the ear headphones, since I've tried on-ear ones and I don't really like them in terms of comfort. From spinnin's suggestions, I like these 3:

Audio-Technica ATH-WS55
Shure SRH440
Sennheiser HD 439

If you can recommend something similar to these round $100 that'd be great. Otherwise I'll most likely go with some of them.

Thanks!

How about Creative Aurvana Live!? Here's a review: http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/creative-aurvana-live-classic-reincarnate

Missed these for some reason, anyway, they look quite decent but I'm having a bit of a hard time finding them here (yes, our online shops suck and lack higher quality products in general :/ ). I found a nice pricing on HD439 tho ($90). Are the Creatives comparable to the HD439? They are rated 10 positions lower than the Sennheisers here on head-fi, wandering if I should spend the extra $30 or do my best to dig the Creatives out...

I get quite picky while buying stuff, thanks for the suggestions, I guess I narrowed it down to just these 2 now.

Cheers!

For your prefered music genre the HD439 will lack bass.
I personally don't find them bassy at all.
A lot of the headphones spinnin suggested are bass shy.

There's really not a lot of good (over the ear) option under $100. The creative aurvana live is your best bet right now.

The M-Audio Q40 should be perfect for you and it's only $99, but the shipping might push it out of your budget.

Should I definitely look for the Creatives then? What do you think will have enough bass and be over-ear in that price range?

It depends on how much extra bass you want. The XB500 are very bass heavy phones. The Creatives moderately so. Here are graphs showing the different frequency response:

Ultrasones generally have very good bass. You might see what models are available to you.

The creative aurvana live tends to sit on a lot of people's ears, rather than over. I did list the CAL! in my initial post. I like them. Their sound is balanced but still has some very good bass. However, I found the headband to be very uncomfortable after 20 minutes of use. The Creative aurvana live is a re badged Denon, IIRC. Good sound quality but they are fragile.

The Monoprice & the Panasonic have very good sound overall. In your price range, you can get all three under budget or swap one out for the Superlux HD 681's.

The Monoprice has good sound quality and are built solid.

Without complicating things to much , the audio-technica WS55 might be the right one for you. Solid build quality, good price, very good sound quality.

Within those three, go for the ATH-WS55. But also check out the Pioneer STEEZ 808.
