Easiest and cheapest solution would be getting a portable amp. Also you can get a DAC/Amp and skip the internal DAC chip in your S4 and use the external DAC chip. Check FiiO products. If you only need an amp I suggest FiiO E11 and if you want a DAC/Amp check FiiO E07K. Of course there are better products but FiiO is really good price/quality wise.

All audio files are stored in digital format in your media drives let it be a media player, phone or laptop. On the other hand as human beings we need analogue output to listen to sounds. Therefore a DAC chip converts digital signal to analogue signal for audio output and we enjoy our music that way. If you have a better quality DAC output will be better as well. If you have a low end DAC chip in your device result is not really satisfactory. For example at home I use a MacBook Pro and it gives pretty decent sound output since Apple uses pretty good DAC chips in its products but at work I have a Sony Vaio and sound quality makes me wanna destroy my eardrums with a pen. If you are not satisfied with your sound quality improving the internal DAC with an external choice is a good method to solve the problem but before doing that you need to make sure about having good quality media files. A DAC or Amp won't make miracles if you are using low quality media files.

I am not so sure about S4's DAC therefore I can't help you with necessity of a DAC. Still I would suggest you a budget DAC/Amp so you can later use the DAC option if you decide that you need it. Otherwise a simple Amp will probably solve most of your problems. Also as far as I remember you need to upgrade the current kernel of your S4 with a custom one if you want to bypass the internal DAC and use the external one. For your laptop you dont need to do that. A USB connection will easily bypass the internal DAC of your computer.

About E6: It might be enough for your needs. I have no idea. I never used them. I would still suggest you to go for E07K if you are not too budget sensitive.

Well I can not tell much without actually trying it. I will do my best to try it in shortest time possible. Oh another adrantage of getting E07K instead of E6 would be option of fine tuning. In E07K you can fine tune the bass and treble (from -10 to +10) you have 3 predefined eq choices in E6 and you have to choose one of them.
