Hey guys. Im brand new here so excuse me if i make any errors or sound a bit off when talking about sound.

First Off,

I'm an 18 year old soon to be college student, and admittedly a basshead. I love EDM of all types and I have always wanted a higher end headphone that can give me incredible bass, and give me decent highs, mids, and lows. I've been doing a lot of research into headphones and I currently own a pair of Skullcandy Aviators, and the Skullcandy Crushers. I'm pretty happy with both, but as I've said before I'm looking for something higher ended that gives me great bass and overall sound. Looks aren't really in my priorities, however as a college student I am going to be mobile, which means I am going to need something durable (even though i am extremely careful with every piece of equipment I own).

Here is where the big question comes in. I've heard nothing but praise about the V-Moda Crossfade M-100's. I've been through MANY reviews and even though all of them have pretty much said that they are fantastic and that they are great for bass and EDM, I just can't wrap my head around the $300 price tag on them. Granted, I don't have a problem spending that kind of money for a fantastic pair of cans, I just want to be sure I'm making the right choice here, and will be satisfied at the end of the day. I know there may be other alternatives out there for more or less money, but again, I've heard that the M-100's have gotten countless awards. So my questions for all of you headphone and audio gurus on Head-Fi is:

Am I making the right choice in buying these?
Are there any good alternatives you guys can suggest?
Do any of you own the M-100's or were in the same boat as me when you bought them? Are you happy with your purchase?

I'm just looking for everyone's two cents here, so all opinions are completely welcome, positive or negative.

Thanks, Jared

Oh boy, my first time introducing someone to head-fi! "Sorry for your wallet!" Wow, that was fun. Anyways, congratulations attending college, you will have boat loads of fun (I just graduated, I know). I tried the M100s for only a minute or two and was impressed with the clarity and bass impact. However, they didn't offer a very spacious soundstage, which is important to me, and I don't particularly like on-ear headphones.

I would look at the Ultrasone Pro 900 and the Beyerdynamic 770 Pro (32 ohm if you are running strait out of an iPod) if I were you. I have owned the Pro 900 for almost a year (I am selling them now btw, sorry for the advertisement) but am getting tired the bass-centric sound they have. They are known for having excellent bass; large and tight while not bleeding into the other frequencies. They also have very pronounced highs which some people (like me) like and others don't. Burning the headphones in are key to taming the highs. I used the Pro 900s throughout my senior year of college to commute and played them right out of my iPod and they sounded great and are very portable, durable, and compact. In my opinion they are exceptional for EDM due to their deep bass and sparkly highs (they will blow you away coming from your Skullcandies). I'm moving to the K550s because I tend to value soundstage more than I due bass (taste changes with time I guess).

Here is some advice for this hobby: By used equipment because you will be able to sell it for the same price you bought it for. You may think that the phones you are buying now will be with you for ever; that may or may not be true so you might as well play it safe. Buying used equipment has made this hobby very enjoyable and "economically efficient" for me! Another hint: buy used phones from Amazon. You get $4 overnight shipping as a student and can keep them for around 30 days or so before you return them. I have done that with many more phones than I care to admit. Part of this hobby is exploring what different phones, amps, dacs, cables, chairs, ambience, liquor, lighting can do for your listening experience so buckle up for the ride!

I'm sure you will get a couple more recommendations on this thread but do some research on the Pro 900s in the meantime. FYI mine that I am selling have the Kees mod so check that out too. If you are interested in a cheap pair of Pro 900s just shoot me a PM or check the FS forum and search for 'em. Other than that, feel free to start asking questions!

If SQ is important for you, then go for the Pro900 instead.
