Hello, all. I'm looking for a full sized headphone with an emphasis on vocal reproduction. Think the spider real voice, as a full sized can as an example. Closed is preferred, as I already have two pair of fully open cans, and definitely could use something more isolated.

Vocal stuffs includes choir work, Enka, lots of foreign pop and dance stuffs, some more vocally driven metal genres, etc.

I disagree, on the premise, that if the track is mixed with boosted bass, a neutral bass quantity should pick that up. Clarity, and articulation are more important.

I think the ultrasone hfi780s do a particularly good job with vocals. People talk about them sounding shrill out of the box and being susceptible to sibilance but I don't remember that being the case 2 years ago when I got them and it certainly is not the case now with hundreds of hours of burn in.

The ATH-A900X are currently $155 at buydig. I think they are very hard to beat at that price for the types of music you describe, unless you are looking for a bass heavy headphone.

My experience with the HFI-780s is that they have extra bass emphasis and a warm sound due to recessed upper mids. Clarity/detail resolution is not on par with the A900X. But they are more portable if that's important. The wings on the A900X make them a bulky headphone that's best left at home.

The A900x doesn't suit my needs. I've listened to them quite extensively, actually.

Not a big fan of ultrasone's sound, either.

I'm not on much of a budget. This is more of a goal to work towards. I already have extremely capable source and amplification, so leave that out of the equation.

Can I get more suggestions, please? How do the Shure 880/940 sound? I'm looking for a balanced can, with an emphasis on mids/vocals. Closed, circumaural. I'm looking with something with quite a bit of clamping force - my head is comically tiny. I have to hold the A900x to my head with a headband, or my hands or they fall off.

The Shure SRH 940 are excellent for vocals and are also very detailed. Some people find them lacking in the low end,but I'd say they're neutral.

I fixed the "wing" problem with my A900Xs by tieing or holding down the wings towards the cups, leaving them that way over night (a few nights), it changes the springs "memory", so the headphones do not slide down as much.

I think it works better then using the rubber band.

From my experience some can's just don't put out bass, some sound good with rock and pound with techno and other sound good at rock and just make the techno dub bass sound like rock/jazz.

Open or Closed? cuz something like the HD600's might be good. For closed id say  maybe the Sennheiser momentums? or Denon D600's? The M-80's have nice vocals but there on ear

The kef m500 has the best vocals I've ever heard coming from a closed can. Second best I've heard is between a900x, mdr 1r, and psb m4u1.

Closed cans I've heard:
Focal Spirit One, Sennheiser momentum, Dt770, A900x, D600, Psb m4u, Ath ws99, Fidelio l1, etc..

I second the PSB M4U1! As well as the AKG K550!
