It's tough to get really detailed in the comparisons for two reasons...1st, I didn't get enough time with it to really get the full length and breadth of the tonality and 2nd, I was using a Modi as the source. While Modi is a terrific value, it's not a Gungnir or even a Bifrost Uber. So the subtle vocal 'smearing' I heard is something I attribute to the DAC rather than the amp. It wasn't bad, but I could tell the source was a limiting factor.
That said, it's a solid step up from the Mjolnir in terms of dynamics and ease. Complicated and louder passages were distinct and effortless. Bass was plentiful, but controlled with a vice-like grip. The decay on drum beats and cymbal strikes were there, but never felt like overhang.
In terms of imaging, it equaled the WA22's holographic imaging capabilities...which is saying a lot, IMO. There was still a certain level of euphonic joy that comes from the WA22 that wasn't quite duplicated, but the real reason I love the WA22 is the imaging...and Ragnarok matched it....even with Modi as the source!
The one thing that was a little disconcerting at first was the volume control. It 'clicks' audibly when adjusted...not like a physical clink from detentes, but an electronic one from the 64-step relay-switched attenuator. Took a moment to get used to, but then I realized I don't need to adjust it often, so what does it matter?
I need a lot more time to really flesh out a proper full review...that's something I hope to have once it's released and I get my name on the 'want it' list! All in all, I will say that the SQ and the feature set are HUGE accomplishments at this price point. Look through Stereophile's 'Recommended Components' at the 'A' and 'B' level integrated amps and note the prices. The realize that none of them feature headphone outs. This is a component that no only includes HP outs...it focuses on them. If, after extended listening, the Ragnarok continues to impress the way it did on initial listening, I will be putting my Audio Research Preamp and Musical Fidelity Power Amp as well as some headphone amps on the market...this may be the one to rule them all!
