[REVIEW] Aurisonics ASG-2 & 2.5 (with many comparisons)
Jun 30, 2013 at 2:06 PM Post #1,111 of 7,021
The IE800, Inks' (modded) W4, and the F4 arrived today.

The IE800 is terrific.  I've been listening with it for just a few hours.  The very smooth signature definitely leans to the warmer side of neutral.. but it's executed in an articulate, refined manner.
Sub-bass is awesome.. though it's jacked up a little too much for my taste.  It brings the bounce in no uncertain terms and remains impressively clean while doing so.
The midrange is stunning
.  It leans to the warm side, but it possesses some of the best depth, dynamics, and clarity I've heard from an IEM (custom or otherwise)... all delivered in an impeccably smooth manner.  Vocals, in particular, have a wonderfully realistic quality to them.
Treble could stand to have a little more body and better presence in places (Eke nailed it with his "cymbals sound like they're getting hit with chopsticks' analogy), but it's wholly non-fatiguing, detailed, and serves a complimentary role to the mids and bass.
Tweak the treble for a more rounded presence, tune back the sub-bass a few dBs.. and you've got a tremendous phone, IMO.
There's not much in the universal IEM game that really interests me these days, but the IE800 is one of the few phones I would seriously consider buying.  It's something I could see myself enjoying for a long time.

Quick note about Inks' modded W4: very impressive.  Much better than the stock W4 (which I was, ultimately, not impressed with).  The modded W4 flattens out the stock W4's godawful midbass hump and gives a more linear treble response.. these two changes provide better midrange clarity.  The modded W4 is
still on the warm/bassy side, but much better behaved than the stock W4, IMO.  The modded W4 reminds me of the IE800's "runty, little brother".. and that's a compliment, btw.  Nice job by Inks.

F4 Sui.. nice.. but it's pretty 'meh' to my ears (so far).  Clean, slightly dry mids.. nice detail and balance.. but on the whole, I'm left feeling underwhelmed.. muttering to myself, "this is what the fuss is about?"  I'm not hearing how/where this is some kind of "uber-clear, resolution beast" with a really unique signature. I've only used it very briefly &
maybe I need to play with the fit, though.

Thank for your feedback.

Im looking for upgrading from my ex 800 (7550), i really like the deep bass and mid from them.

Do you think ie800 could be a good upgrade or should i go to k3003 or togo334 ?

Super curious about the 1plus2 updates. Had some very negative impressions about the 1plus2s the first time I had them. After reading so many other positive reviews, I had to give them another try. This time my impressions are very positive but I still find the build quality and ergonomics to be sub par.

However, Eke's new findings seem excellent.

There's a point between 1:01 and 1:12 where he hums a simple melody. On the stock cable, his voice sounds bloated and a bit tubby. Switching to the translucent cable cleans it up considerably.

What cable are you using? Is it the thinner version? I find it to be so much more comfortable than the first one I used. It's still not on the Westone-style level but it's still much more comfortable, given the type of metals used in the cable. Build quality is very decent, though still not as good as my asg-2 or the fitears. It just doesn't feel as fragile anymore.

There's only one solution Eke, buy the cable and don't look back.

Don't get caught up in technicities. You're missing the bigger picture Eke. Imagine a world of sonic bliss, where it rains detail and shines timbre, where there's perfect bass around every corner, an endless soundstage in every pot and a midrange that pours like a good vintage, with imaging so real you can eat it and take cover under a blanket of shimmery treble. All the time. I'm just saying is all...

For those who have been complaining about the long wait for the upgrade program.

I sent in my pair of ASG-1s in Dec 2012* and they (ASG-2) were just shipped out last week in the first batch.

Really look forward to hearing them soon.

*While neither Andy nor I expected the wait to be so long I was taken care of very well throughout the wait.

Hey Eke2k6, what are your three top iems? ASG-2 at the top? I just can't get over that I disliked the ASG-1...

I'd say that anyone who liked the 334 would like the G-2. They sound very similar to one another. I'd personally give the upper hand to the G-2 though. I prefer the bass/treble response on the G-2 to the 334. Don't regret letting the 334 go for a second.

Wow, that's high praise indeed. As subjective as this hobby is, the TG 334 remains my favorite and I've heard a lot of phones. My first foray into ciems was the ES5 and the TG334 tore them a new one.

My impressions of my first 1plus2 are here (warning- very harsh feedback):

After a trade with my Canadian friend LCFiner, I got a second set of 1plus2s and my opinions are more in line with Eke's initial thoughts.

His 6/30 feedback is what has my curiosity peeked now.

The 334 is also one of my faves, and believe me, the two phones are very similar in tonality and technical performance. The G-2 really serves to highlight the price/performance disparity between certain phones. I don't find neither the 334 nor the 1P2 to actually provide tangible benefits in SQ in a way that actually justifies the near $1,000 premium. As Eke says, the G-2 is positioned where diminishing returns kick in severely.

Oh nice, he finally moved that set. Were you the one who traded a 334 for his 1P2? I talked to him about that awhile back.
