If you put touchscreen, you gotta add physical side buttons otherwise the dap is useless you can throw it away. No usability in pocket or whatsoever, so I would say, not maybe but definitely side buttons

Haven't been keeping up with this but the x5 is quite ugly... Looks like a stove top burner or a reticle from a sight on call of duty

I do understand what you mean. One could send a 2.8224 MHz signal over the GPIO. In theory I could do that on my STM32 board at home. Has somebody done this before?

I doubt they do it and like ClieOS, don't really care. Was a neet idea.

Take a look at the above poll items 1-3, all of which are options for more storage. 203 (34%) Headfi votes went to poll items 1-3 and those people want more storage than what X5 currently offers. However poll items 1 or 3 may not be easily implemented in a portable DAP currently. The easiest way to increase storage is adding OTG host function to use with external USB flash drives and self-powered hard drives. 

X5 can implement OTG host function via firmware. Add a cheap 128GB USB flash drive and you get >240GB portable storage. Now.

Yes, library update / tag reading may take a while for a big hard drive. But for a USB flash drive, under a good firmware, it would be just a few minutes. I personally don't use library/tag-reading function as I listen by album folders under genre-artist-album structure. If you have a big music collection, you may want to organize your collection a little better. Scanning external storage without library/tag update will be a lot faster.

I understand that some don't / can't use OTG host function, but you cannot say that it is a useless function (which misleadingly indicates that it is useless for anyone). It may be useless to you, but it is very useful to myself and at least 16 other Headfiers. I said "at least" because when you don't have other options (e.g., poll items 1 and 3) of adding storage (e.g., onto X5), a lot more Headfi votes will go to OTG host function instead, as that is the only option left. The poll is a single choice only (if you vote for "2 SD cards" you cannot vote for "OTG host"), if you did not notice already.

It all depends how they have implemented the scanning function on the connected OTG drive or small USB key. If it reads the directory and do not cache anything I doubt you'll be using it for a long time, you'll get tired of browsing and waiting for the music to load so let's see how James has implemented the functionality then we can talk.

Apart from it looks.. IMO the design itself is a big flaw..the physical wheel wouldn't be able to hold onto its function after a given period of time (1-2 years depends on usage)...but other than that fiio gets it right when it comes to put a price tag on it..so overall it is good value for the money

dont read too much into that poll. The sample size is WAY to small.  It's power is no where near strong enought to show what the people really want.  500gb - 1tb store is just ridiculous.  How much music do you guys expect to carry around?  Seriously?  Two sd card slots...sure; thats reasonable.  OTG host is the 2nd lowest wanted feature.  only above analog line in.

I have a X3 now, for me OTG is not so much a matter of how much music I want to carry round. I have a pretty diverse tastes in music, and I can never predict what I want to listen to at the moment. Have a s-load of storage saves me from having to swap tunes every few days. I already have a drawer full of minidiscs, don't want to go down that road with sd cards. Until bigger microsds hit the market (at an affordable price) OTG (or adapters) are really the only option. The other bonus is that when it comes to listening at home I could get a self-powered drive big enough to store all my music and use it as a mini music server. Of course scanning times could be an issue, but if a person keeps their music well organized the using the file browser should work fine.

I think most of us voted for the ES9018 DAC chip instead of the larger storage.  If Fiio really listen to us, then please change the PCM1792 to the ES9018K2M. I don't wanna wait another 1 year to have the ES9018K2M DAP. Give me a ES9018K2M X5, even the price is 50USD or 100USD higher.

Wish it would be that simple James has already committed the X5 to manufacturing so the Saber dac is not going to be for this implementation but most likely for the X7 which is still on the drawing board.

On the OTG subject yes keep the directory structure simple, short file names and clean tags although the X5 might not be that sensitive on the tag side. It should be accessible quickly and a desktop use makes so much more sense.
