The Fiio X5 Thread

I can't find the statement of Fiio again, but they stated somewhere officially, that this clicking is intended, as the relays switch when turned on/off and in case of sudden headphone removing. Should be some kind of protection circuit...

Check out Custom Art for the sub-$300 CIEM price range imo

Does anyone else experience an occasional click sound when turning on/off the X5?

Turn-on "thump" delay (keeps speakers from creating a popping sound when the amp stage is powered) as well as overload protection are listed, and I'm more used to it being a thump delay from subwoofer setups in cars.  The more you use it, the clearer and louder the relay click becomes in the first week.  A lot of people don't hear it at first, but notice it after a week or two and think it's broken.

I don't remember which thread it was pointed out to me on, but http://www.jdslabs.com/products/146/ultra-short-3-5mm-interconnect-cable/ is bloody awesome.  It's not the absolute perfect shortest distance for connecting the X5 & E12, but the cable distance between the jacks is roughly 1.25" from tip to tip.  Yes I know I might appreciate something higher quality, but considering I bought 2 of these and paid $13 shipped, I'm cutting an inch at least in height off from when I was using the cable that came with the X5 mounting rig.

One pet peeve with the X5 is that when the screen turns off, I cannot fast forward or rewind. I really dislike overly long song intros and always fast forward past them. Has anyone figured out how to regain this functionality with the screen off?

A second pet peeve is that when the screen goes out, long holds on the volume buttons forward to the next song or start the song over. This is not very useful to me and can be frustrating when I am just trying to adjust the volume. Has anyone figured out a way to disable this functionality?

Otherwise, the X5 rocks!

Looks great. Less damage-prone from "bumping" it into something.

Does it sound any different from the silver cable?

And if you turn the E12 "upside down" does it still work? (So the knob is on the left instead of right)

I personally have a really hard time telling cable differences, so in that respect I'm not an adequate judge. Flipping the E12, it offsets the amp about 1/4" or so, not allowing the 2 to evenly line up.

If I notice any differences, I'll let you know.

Best I can really suggest is changing the Screen time out. I've learned that if I want to use the normal functions of any buttons once the screen has turned off, to just click the Power button to get the screen lit first.

Bummer, I was trying to avoid that to save battery life, minimize required button clicks, and to simplify operation for jogging and sleeping.

LOL... JDS Labs gave me one of those cables at RMAF this past weekend, I liked it because you can keep the X5 case almost completely closed while using it.
I picked one up and said "Look a cable for the X5-E12". They looked at me kinda funny and I held out my X5-E12 that I was using to play my musical goodness and I showed them were to put it.  I asked how much, they said you can have it, great guys.

I always thought it was a lot of bogus, but the difference in sound between the cable that came with the E12DIY, and the cable that came with the HS-6 kit really sort of scared me.

Another part that can be upgraded, and will certainly make my wallet weep at night.

I found the position as i just said to be better for the HS-6 cable, and the little note that came with the E12DIY described that this is the correct position.

Something more on topic, i've made a new modification of the "menu" or "homescreen", showing all 7 icons, in a way similar to how the X1 shows them.
The firmware can be found here:
