The Fiio X5 Thread

Happy times, the HS6 fits the Hugo, just...

Apologies for the poor picture (and the twisted top band at the top, as said, just fits, and I'd rather have a twisted band than a snapped one!)

Hi Duncan,
Is the X5 still the best transport for the Hugo?

If price is not an option, apparently AK240 is still the best transport for Hugo

Firmware changes introduce a noticeable change in sound quality?  I guess I'll stick with fw2.0 to be safe for now

I've personally noticed no change, and there is nothing in the changelogs either.  So far it's been only a few that have claimed SQ differences.  personally - I'm doubtful of the claims.

Joe - James - can you please advise.  Was the SQ tweaked in any way?  Would be nice if we could stop the speculation

I'm thinking that to be so open to critisism for FiiO has led them to bad press about the X5 in general.  I hear from other threads the X5 is getting extremely mixed comments, mainly about its flaws.  Could this be affecting sales.  If I was to open some sort of company, I would think twice about asking for feedback since it seems that James and Joe can't seem to satisfy anyone.
Now, no tomatoes please.  LOL

Same thing happened in the X3 thread during the last beta. I never heard it and the majority said they did.

No product ever satisfies everyone. I imagine James and Joe knew what they were doing and will use any feedback they can and respectfully shrug off any feedback they can't (not saying that they would ignore it, but acknowledge it and move on).

I can't think of a single product that is universally loved, but understanding what people do/don't like allows companies to stick to their values AND provide products that people want

Here's the funny thing though - with the X3 Fiio were actively trying to change the sound (from what I've read).  But with the X5 - they aren't.  So far we've had several comments with the various X5 FW releases (beta and stable) regarding changed SQ - but Fiio had already confirmed earlier that so far they hadn't touched the actual SQ.  Read into that what you will.  I am yet to hear any change.  So far it's all been UI and usability.

Far too much reliance on 'what you think you can hear" a lot of the time

I most definitely notice a change from 1.00 vs the newer firmwares. Personally I've gone back to 1.00 due to that. The Sui is particularly revealing of such nuances. Took it from wow to I want to sell the X5

It seems to me that there is judgment floating around for people who "think"" they hear a different sound with various firmware. I am one of those people. I guess I expected a little more of acceptance from a community of people claim to that hear things other don't. I long accepted that one person can listen to the same setup and hear it as warm and another hears it as cold. Our ears are as unique as any set of cans. I am not the judge of what you can and cannot hear.

No judgement

I'd just like to hear from Joe or James as to whether or not the change in FW has also changed the SQ.  At this stage, they are the only ones who know (either way) for sure.

On some firmware reversion where the software decoders has been modified, there should be some changes in SQ. No doubt about that as measurements had been made. A good example will be the mp3 decoder upgrade in v2, which significantly improves the SNR. But any time you hear SQ improvement  / change over something like a playlist bugfix, those are just imaginary.
