Now when you put out an outrageously priced product and do not have anything in your line up as an alternative. Well, you just became a terrific marketing tool for your competition.

This. Something I noticed about my daughter, she tried to run right off the bat and kept falling flat on her face. I chalk that up to obvious immaturity (she's 14 months old).

What if a former Yamaha engineer who has done it thousands of times and concieved their well ragarded orthos, was now working for Abyss, i'm just saying, anything's possible.

That was really the point of Orpheus. As a sales tool it was probably the most effective stunt the industry has ever seen. It commanded attention like nothing else, stunned you, stopped you dead in your tracks. The whole point really was you felt a lot better about paying for your 600's when you could compare them to the Orpheus and say there isn't that 11,400 worth of difference. The PR Senni got out of those was probably a hundred times what the design effort cost them.

True enough, for others maybe, but i already owned my HD600, BEFORE i heard the Orpheus, so your logic doesn't apply in my case.

I don't think that the Abyss absolutely needs to have an alternative in their line up, they just need to be able to compete with other expensive headphones already on the market, even though, aside from the 009, i don't know of any other headphones in that price range.

I do agree that entering a market with an high end product, is not common practice, but keep in mind that Ferrucio Lamborghini used to build farm tractors before he started building high end sports cars, and last time i cheked, they're still in buisness.

All i'm saying is, although they have set the bar VERY high, let's give them a chance to prove themselves before crucifying them based on looks and price alone.

Not possible when Joe already said that he and his two sons prototyped the Abyss from scratch. Not to mention whether or not those engineers still even work for Yamaha when they use to manufacture ortho headphones.

Back then companies like Sony, Senn, Yamaha etc made those special unobtanium headphones just for sake of proving that they can, it's unlikely we will ever see something like an R10, Orpheus, YH1000 made in today's modern time.

Sennheier will be releasing another limited edition Orpheus in the near future.

Lambo, not exactly an exemplar  business model now is it? Been bankrupt almost as many time as................Maserati:) Ever thrown a Miura into a tight left hander? Bought out by Chrysler........now owned by Audi.

Sennheiser never pulled an RA1 on the market did they?

You're right, but i still can't believe that Joe, and his two sons weren't just chilling, having a beer one day, and one of them just blurted out,, HEY!, i have an idea, why don't we start making some $5000 headphones.

I can't help bu think that, one of them, if not, all of them, must have some knowledge on how to build headphones, or at the very least, some collaboration from someone who does, if not, well, that pretty much means that even you and i, could have a crack at it. heck!,If you can handle a soldering iron, i'm kind of a sniper with a glue gun.

With the information and tools at hand and readily available to almost anyone, any small time company (or individual) with the interest in the field can get into the headphone scene backed up a company scope to whom the product will be targetted at. I wouldn't even be surprised if the Abyss cost less than $2k to make than throw in another $3k on top for either the cables or the fact you're buying from "JPS labs - supplier of the best cables".

Pretty funny stuff there. They do make headphone cables, that's not too far off. Though, It would be funnier if they were spark plug maker.

Grado, or Joe Grado started the company with the experience of building high-end microphones and cartridges for over 40 years in the late 1980s. You absolutely cannot compare Grado with JPS. Any engineer would immediately tell you that cables do not make any difference to sound quality, however JPS say otherwise. It is this mentality that makes this headphone a bad joke in a way and why so many of us are here discussing + predicting its fate.
