Bottom-line:
The K712 is a modded Q701 dressed up in a black & orange Kick-Ass suit...

Noooo dooooont send it back. Gg. Wow, easiest mod to balanced ever if the connector took itself out.

Lol way to make lemonade out of lemons, positive thinking right there!

No idea why they would outsource the Q701 and keep other stuff in Austria. Maybe they are going to move everything to china and are testing.

I'm not going to say this is the only reason, but have you seen the price that the Q701 is selling for these days? They cut costs to keep making profit, so they're using the cheap labor of China (why any company manufactures in China). This doesn't necessarily mean a drop in quality... it could include, but not definitely a worse headphone. I believe the K701 and Q701 are being made in China now.
Meanwhile, the K712 is still made in Austria.

K712 Pro are well worth even 500USD, I said it many times... There is absolutely no way I would call Q701 superior. Better sound and better comfort - I would take them over LCD-2 and some other headphones as well. They are really good and versatile.

Yes, they are NOT on the level of HD800... But still, I must recommend them, they are REALLY good...

It's not that Q701 are technically worse, they are absolutely in the same league... It's the fact that previous 701/702 headphones (not the Annies) sounded very unnatural and pretty much lacked bass (again, I am not a basshead, I find HD800s bass to be the best I've heard so far). K712 Pro fixed the bass issue and made upper mids to treble section sound almost nonproblematic.

Q701 already did this, but it wasn't enough for everyone I guess.
IMO the Q701 improved on these things compared to the K702.
The upper mids aren't really any smoother or less fatiguing on the K712 IMO. If it's the recordings fault it's still there. They won't touch that.
It actually took me maybe 5 hours to actually find a track where something was actually smoother on the K712.
The Q701 or K712 never made things worse.

Like I keep saying some things are worse on the K712 and others it's the Q701. I actually found the Q701 less fatiguing. Q701 has some slightly forward upper mids and the K712 has very slightly more forward low mids..take your pick.

AKG could release a Q701 PRO, which is basically a Q701 with the bass port open. Maybe build it in Austria (it being made in China is OK to me) and include more extras. No memory foam pads to keep the costs down. $250-$300 sounds good.

I'd definitely suggest the K712 for those that prefer more bass and warmth. But honestly IMO this stuff about it being much smoother and more forgiving isn't really true at all. I think AKG didn't actually FIX anything on the upper mids except gave it new pads.

The very full mids of the K712 are addicting though. I hope AKG can reduce the price a little and then i'd consider it.

If it ever drops to $325 I might suggest it over the Q701 if they can't mod a Q701. Maybe someone will have a Black Friday sale on the K712. Not likely! Maybe Amazon will if they even sell them.

I bought a set of Q701's only about 2 weeks ago.

I don't know about Q's, but I confirmed with an authorized dealer that the latest K701's are no longer made in Austria. I've also heard of Chinese-made Q701's as well- there was a post here about two months ago about a green pair without the "Made in Austria" logo on the earcups.

Might be that you got an older stock.

I am just kind of worried that they are the fake version!

I am not going to be able to conduct the unmodded HD800 vs the K712 Pro review, but thanks to those that have given their impressions here in this thread.

Every time I listen to the K712 Pro I am impressed with the detail and soundstage.  They are definitely keepers until I can move up to the HD800.

Like I've alluded to earlier, I owned the HD800 before this and this is still satisfying enough to hold me over for a few months until I can upgrade again.  Though, I'll likely go the K812 route next depending on impressions.
