$170 is close to the price on sennheiserusa.com, it's $179 there. If I'm not mistaken, I think the 558 is just a new designed HD 555. You can find those for around $110 shipped. You can do the same foam mod to make them a 595 (598 is the new designed version)

I would have to concur.  The HD 555, 558, 595 and 598 measure incredibly similar and by scientific definition should also sound very similar (unless you're not into science - of course if you're sitting at your PC reading this then you owe your life to science)

If you are buying the headphones for the sound quality and not for the new design, it would be a total waste of money to buy the 558 or 598. I would go with the 555 and do the foam mod. That's the cheapest option and you're still going to get good sound quality. If you remove the plastic behind the foam, the sound stage widens too. I just performed the sound stage mod to my 555's. I haven't gotten to listen to them yet, as they are still disassembled. I'm also installing a 3.5mm jack in them so the cable is detachable
