Sound quality wise? That's interesting... For me, IEMs sound too inside my head, and headphones don't fix this either. Only speakers sound natural and creates a musical ambiance for me, hence why I sold everything headphones and went with speakers.

Cool so you basically you take your speakers with you to the office or airplane ? jogging with speakers must be a lot of fun.

Benchmark? Don't get ahead of yourself now. :p
They're good but the in ears just don't compete with full sized cans in terms of visceralness, realism, imaging, and microdetail. IEMs do have their own benefits however. It's really Apples to Oranges.

I think you missed the point, I want to know what I'm missing by going with a CIEM rather than a Full size can. I want to compare apples to oranges so I know what the difference is.

Also the HD800 is the headphone on head-fi that most other top tier cans are compared to, so that would make it a benchmark. If you're so skeptical then please make my day and suggest a headphone that is the benchmark.

Depending on your preferences, it could go either way, you may be disappointed, just like I was years back. However, hopefully you don't hear the same as I do and prefer iems to headphones like many others.

I would, in place of "benchmark," use the term "reference point" because for the length of time I owned the LCD2, LCD3, and the HD800, and the amount of money I had spent to make them sound optimal, after a point in which I gave up, they still were not so much of the benchmarks, but rather data points from which I can extract information that could be used in order to draw reasonably accurate comparisons with others' on this site. This was the point of my post.

Sigh, you do realize reference point and bench mark are synonymous right?

I doubt I will be disappointed in my jh16's since I bought them for their original intended purpose. I'm a drummer and I've been struggling with the same problem Alex Vanhalen had when Jerry made him the first Ciem. You can't hear floor wedges very well over the wash of the cymbals even if they're blaring 3 feet from your ear. Secondly regular headphones have a tendency to fall off and have less isolation than I need. I've tried other IEM's but they tend to have issues with fit, sweat and again isolation.

So as much as it is an amazing audiophile product it's also a tool for the performing musician. Even if I find my jh16's below the top tier cans I will value them for what they can do for me.

That's awesome.

Well, benchmark means the "standard," and I am merely disagreeing that said headphones are the "standard."

I think my ears are adjusting to the 16. Vocals seem more forward now... Maybe cable and cross over burn in, maybe not. Mid-bass bloominess is still there and is somewhat annoying. Hopefully they'll even out with more use. I've probably got around 50 hours in.

You need a DAC for that with Low impedance output jack, totally different experience.

I need mah JH3A fast! Looks like my friend sold his HP-P1... I'll have to go to my other friend with his Concero/EF-5 and I'll post here with my results.

I am using a Yulong D100 MK2 DAC - > low headphones output -> JH16  ( midbass is very well controlled and sound is almost neutral )

With boost +3dB  @ 31 Hz and +3dB @ 8Khz .... sound is everything I wanted from an IEM.

PLUS 8k? Isn't it already factory boosted at 8k to compensate for the bass?

Not sure, with Jazz and Blues music, the Piano doesn't sound real ( I'm a player since 20 years more or less )

A little boost in the upper region ( upper mids and treble does the trick to me )

With eletctronic music ( dubstep, DnB ) I turn equalization off to avoid sibling or rupture of my eardrum because of massive amount of bass .

Well, my JH16's arrived in Florida Tuesday for repair. I broke a pin off and could not extract it.

48 hours later it is already being shipped back. The elves in Apopka extracted it somehow...

Amazing. Oh, because they were able to extract it, No Charge!
