Do people really want a new card that makes a 901 sound like a 801? I certainly don't, and would it just be easier and cheaper to get an 802?
Will Head Direct have new cards ?

I heard they are gonna release a cheaper but better (than the stock) card soon, to match the HM650 so to make it even more affordable. Haven't heard of any other card yet.

I kindly ask all the owners of HiFiMAN HM-901 for an advice and assistance.

I use my HiFiMAN HM-901 at home with my headphones HiFiMAN HE-560 and pretty happy about both.
But I want more sound quality and think about buying Fostex HP-A8 DAC/Amp

I am not an experienced audiophile and I've never had a desktop DAC/Amp at home.
So what would you recommend?
Will a desktop DAC/Amp (approx. 1000$) be better for my headphones HiFiMAN HE-560 than HiFiMAN HM-901?

Is HiFiMAN HM-901 equal/similar in sound quality with a 1000$ desktop DAC/Amp?

Thank you.

Or you could buy the HM901 dock which will allow you to use the 901 as a DAC & buy a good amp for $500-$600 that pairs well with HE-560. (Schiit Lyr & Meier Classic come to mind). IMO these amps will give better performance with HE-560 than HM901's amp.

Actually, that is what I am already doing but without any HM901 dock:
I have a tube amp for 500$ and I connect it to HM901 through RCA cables and to my HE-560.

So, your advice is - "don't buy desktop DAC/Amp"?

I would use the dock, as it improves the sound of the 901 and a good desktop amp if you want more power.

I would start with a better amp and then only upgrade to/with the dock, if you really want to squeeze that last drop of SQ out of the HM-901.

Personally I am very, very happy with the sound directly from of the LO of this DAP, so I don't plan getting the dock - especially considering the price. Paired with a high end amplifier, it's a winner. I use Burson Soloist between HE-6 and the line out of the HM-901 and feel this is a quite capable and satisfying desktop setup.
