UPS delivered.  So far this thing is everything it was hyped up to be.  Part of me always thought these high end players were more of a placebo than anything else, but I've owned several other Hifiman products in the past, they sounded amazing, so I gave them the nod when it came time for a one shot high end DAP experiment.

Only having one issue.  Every high res ALAC file above 96khz plays extremely slowly like it is coming from a dead record player.  Did I miss something and are these not supported?  Could have sworn they were.  Really don't want to mess with converting them to FLAC.  My firmware is version 1.080.  Is there an update that fixes this or is it a known issue?

Sounds like you are running the beta 1.080 firmware. The official 1.080 FW should have this fixed IIRC.

Hifiman should designate beta firmwares with a suffix or just use different numbers for the official stable version. Having two versions for each of 1.076 (with/without cue support) and 1.080 (alac speed/alphabetical ordering issues) is utterly confusing.

I don't think there is...yet. Hifiman won't make the cable that's for sure, so we have to wait for a DIY'er to figure it out.

Really strange that this dock costs 400 bucks.  Seems that they could offer a cheaper solution considering the price of the DAP as is. The dock is nice if you want all of those things, but I don't need a home entertainment system powered by the 901, I'm sure most people would rather have it work as a USB dac/amp out of a laptop before using the 901 in their home system, not that it's not a capable DAC, I'm sure it is. I think I have a fair point here. I have a feeling it's due to design reasons that extra ports could not be added? or they just really wanted to go the way of the idevice which... apple products not being universal is not good for the user. It's a big inconvenience.

I was also hoping I could use my phone with a USB OTG cable to feed digital to the 901 on the go because I enjoy my phone's interface, already have my music organized etc. Oh well I canceled my order because of this. It really seems like a stellar product. I would definitely buy if they made it capable as a laptop/desktop usb dac/amp. I was looking for something small too, the dock would not even fit on my desk. Device that is small, discrete, fits on desk, well all that no longer, enjoy a gigantic dock just to plug in a usb cable :frowning2:

Anyway, big respect to Fang/hifiman, don't mean to bash, just a little frustrated :p. Hopefully this becomes available in the future.

Just upgraded the firmware to the latest version (1.081 Beta).

Tried some DFF file... kinda worked but with tons of hiss, as if you were plugging some sensitive IEMs into a very powerful desktop amp.
Strangely the file was identified as "88.1kHz/24 bit". I am not sure if this means DSD playback is not native...

I have the 1.080 FW in my dropbox, in case anyone still wants it: https://www.dropbox.com/s/in5fiz9tnhiojtq/update1080.zip

Thanks pekingduck. Have you tried reverting to 1.080? Would be best if we can ensure downgrading works before rolling with the new beta.

What file(s) gave you issue? Dsf? Dff? Any particular vendor or pattern you spotted?

Many thanks!!

Yep you can downgrade to 1.080 without problems. I have verified this myself lol :)
All my DSD files are rips from SACDs. I am not sure if DSF files are supported (Hifiman has only mentioned DFF) but I'll surely try tonight.

Is there a changelog?

Official announcements are posted on erji as well as hifiman.cn

Hmmm... People on erji.net are also reporting trouble with hisses when playing DFF files.

Just upgrade to 1.081 and tried a few files.  .DSF are not support (yet?) and they won't even show up in the Folder view for you to select.  .DFF files has mixed results, some files play with hiss and others played without.  With the properly playing files it sounded excellent and better than same file on AK120 (probably more to do with how I like the 901 amp section better).

For me 1.081's biggest thing is the improved operations.  Cutting back/forth tracks used to be a bit sluggish and can sometimes even hangs.  This seems to have been fixed now.   Overall UI speed is also improved, nothing significant but noticeably smoother.

Haven't yet found any aspect regressed from the last firmware, and happy to report the sound is most largely, don't wanna say exactly, the same.
