probably because FAT32 has been around forever, people know exactly how it works, it works on pretty much any operating system, and if you read the limitations about max partition size its like 8 terabytes with a 32k cluster size. If aint broke, dont fix it i think.

Can anyone help me with my problem? I formatted my 64GB sandisk card to FAT using GUI format. That worked for my clip zip and for my j3. However when I put the card in the x3 and try to play it says "playback failed, file not found." It also shows that for the music stored on internal memory now too. This is even with the browser. When I take out the card I can play music that is on the X3.

Also, I get a message asking if I want scan and fix the X3 when I plug it into my PC.

We literally just got done discussing this. read a couple pages back and you should find the answer you're looking for. Format using windows FAT32 format, 32kb block size.

Do you mean this? I'm not able to even read files from the browser, either on the internal memory or the SDXC card.

"As most of you who have been following this thread know, I have been having an issue with accessing files through the Categories menu of the X3. I could only see and access files that were on the internal memory but not files that were on my external disk(micro SD card). After several back and forth communications with Ema from FiiO support I have finally, well they finally solved this issue. It turned out that in the formatting of the internal memory of the X3 the setting for allocation was much too low. It was set at just over 4,000 bytes. This was the default setting by my operating system, so not FiiO's fault. I switched it over to 32 kilobytes and voila, problem solved. I can now view all of the files loaded onto m y X3 from the categories menu, Album, Artist and Genre. To say I am ecstatic would be an understatement.

So if anyone else is having an issue viewing files located on the SD card when going through the Categories menu, and is running Windows, hook up your X3 to your PC with the USB cable right click the internal memory and go into "Format" Once in the format box you will see a drop down for "Allocation" Make sure it is set to 32 kiloobytes, then re-format the internal memory, which yes, will erase any of the music files that are already on it, and you should be all set."

I just tried it - no luck.

once you insert your card to x3...make sure go to system menu and then choose at the update library and click on play button..it will update the x3 with your sdcard~..let see if it will help..

so we need to format the card as fat 32 ..32kb? becuase i cant format my 64 gig card as fat 32 under windows.

you need to use special program to format.. see here http://www.head-fi.org/t/651769/fiio-x3-thread-full-review-http-www-head-fi-org-t-663600-impression-fiio-x3-high-fi-low-price/5025#post_9793766

I tried. I get "Update failure reupdate Medialib"... :frowning2:

Edit: I don't know if its related, but even after I eject the X3 from windows and windows says its ok to unplug, the X3 still shows itself as connected...

do you have card reader? i would suggest you to format your sdcard again to fat32...transfer song thru your card reader and try again~...

eventhough i dont have issue to upload song direct with x3 to sdcard...i am suspecting it's your windows cant connect to x3 properly..

Thanks but that's how I put them on initially after formatting to fat - through the card reader. Could the card have gotten corrupted by inserting into the X3 that wasn't first set to 32k?

I'm trying to reformat the internal memory again to 32k. Previously I did quick format. Now I'm not, hopefully that will work.

OK I tried reformatting through guiformatter. It doesn't work. The X3 plays music that in the internal memory if the card is not in the X3. But when I put the cardin the X3, it doesn't recognize files in the internal memory or the card.

The card works in my sandisk clip zip.

Argh.
