Would it be fair to compare a cable upgraded es10 with brand new drivers, to a ws99..???.. ; )

Sorry, clash of the titans won't happen until sufficient burn in as es10 has zero hours lol.

I compare all my headphones at the same level no matter the cost.

While it's not perhaps a fair comparision price-wise it's a very interesting comparision nonetheless. :p

Edit:
I posted my details on the es10 over at the es10 thread..
Only one night burn and it had changed sound, notably in the control of bass wich was more pronounced.
I will say preliminary results are that the two headphones es10&ws99 have different sonic signatures.
Look at the different drivers up close:
Ws99 with large ported vents taped in white and yet voice coil diameter smaller for sale size driver:

Es10 driver with wider diameter voice coil, but smaller vents taped in white:

The diameter of the drivers as same but both voice coil and vents are different size. .

Side note:
Magnets are very strong and pulled my metal ruler in..

Another note is that these port size differences play into the sound as a whole and no to the bass at all, as the bass is huge in amount on both,
just presented differently.

To me the es10 reminds me of an ES7 / es700 taken even more alive and larger, and in every way better to the tenth exponential...
Edit: Ok exaggeration, more like 5x :)

While the ws99 is yet another version(!)..
like a shadow version of an es10, being not as forward, not as bright, seemingly more neutral, calmer and more balanced signature!

It is like the Es10 is superman full time, while the ws99 is like Clark Kent showing same potential(!) Only kicks *ss when called for!. Not a showoff!
Weird I know but maybe someone else can expand how the ws99 bass is not constant and only there when called upon.
Edit: Ok I can narrow this effect due to the lean clean deep speed of the bass .
Opposite of puffy(m100) or bloated (stock s500) bass..

So it actually seems as if when it comes to the bass, it is as if they should trade names!
These are only initial impressionss as I only have the es10 with me now, super honeymoon stage..

Bottom line is the es10 & ws99 are like brothers. .. Picture this alanalogy in "wrestling"..
It is liked "undertaker(es10) & cain(ws99).
I have yet to A/B the details, burn in and amp them so more to come..

Edit: EDIT: EDIT...
Ok I have to revise.. Did a quick A/B at home.
Bass is different. Slightly deeper with more focus & impactfull on ws99. In other words faster.
Deeper darker sound on ws99 while es10 livelier brighter .
Bass on my brand new es10 drivers is there and different as I am noticing continual bass change in control as it breaks in..
Switching to ws55 pads for now..

So the WS99 Solid Bass needs to be renamed to WS99 Clark Kent Bass. Funny!

I knew nothing of the ES10 before your posts. They seem to have been around for a few years, and are about $277 on amazon japan (ie $100 more than the WS99) now and about $350 on amazon. So, I suppose they should be pretty good!

My premature observations are not fair so I will re evaluate these ws99 and my new es10 in a week.
Also I am thinking the ws99 is what the esw10 (w) should have been.

The es10 is on my head now and is just beautiful. For those that want an impression the closes thing is a es700 but bigger and better.
The most impressive part is that Audio Technica sweet tuning.

After listening to so many cans I finally realize what Audio Technica meant by "solid bass"...

There are many bassy cans out they are dime a dozen now..
It is not the amount of bass but the particular type of bass...
The ws99 gives a very very solid impression wich is much better than:
bloomy
fat
bouncy
fluffy
dull
boomy
ugly
lightweight
Airy
flashy
heavy
Congested
Distant
overbearing
Out of place
or Anemic bass..
that practically all other cans I tried had.
Now I know..
Only two remain standing in my portable headphone journey:
Ws99 & es10..

I was just thinking the same thing when I read your post lol. I find myself just getting lost in and mezmerized by the beautiful bass that these things put out.

You appreciate and love the S500... I can't possibly see how the WS99's won't get their hooks into you pretty darned quickly. Danny didn't feel 100% comfortable with the SQ of his WS99's until after about 70 hours of burn in, and I think that dsnuts has recommended 100 hours. I'm only at about 30 hours, but I can't take them off of my head...

Been trying to only buy stuff now that I will be happy with for the long haul. When you hear people whose opinions and experience you respect rave about something this highly, you know these fit that criteria. :) In awhile I will get a higher end open can and have all the areas of audio bliss covered enough for me.
